Sanatorium at M<**in. N. C., re cenlty have now been tabulated and show a marked saving on a new construction method em ployed, says Frand Turner, sopk esman for the engineering office of the Budget Bureau in f&aleigh. The new design, created by F. Carter Williams, Raleigh archi tect, employs Reinforced Rowlock Brick walls, which system affords greater strength with thinner walls than ordinary construction. This is said to be the primary re* son for the economy. Jaw bidder on. th* r&w strict, tyre was Wilson -Ledford Con struction Co., of Gastonia, who placed an alternate bid increas ing the general contract bid of $39,361 by almost 10 percent, to substitute brick and cinder block walls for the new system. Alternate bids for the two me thods of construction were re quested because k was feared that economies of the Reinforced Rowlock Brick wall might not be apparent on its first trial in this area, but it. was significant that only 3 of the 12 general contrac tors bidding on the project offer ed bids favoring the more con ventional system'. According to Mr. Turneer, whose office diligently watches expenditures on State construc tion, these results indicate . that the new meahod offers real pos sibilities for saving money on the large North Carolina building pro gram projected for the near fu ture. .
