There are many Insects that do

to the gardens, each year. Three
of the most common are the bean
| beetles, potato beetles, and *?
1 phidti.
The adult Mexican bean beetle
La a copper colored beetle having
16 black spots. The larvae, or
"grubs," are fuzzy, lemon to o
range coloted. Both the adult and
the larvae feed on the underside
of the leaves of snap and lima
beans, causing them to appear
"lace-lilte." When present in lar
ge numbers, they also eat the
pods and stems. There *u"e usual
ly J to .4 generations a year, re
quiring about 30 days from the
egg to the adult stage. These can
be controlled by dusting with Ro- .
tenone or Cryolite. Care should be '
takvn to get this on the under- 1
side of the leaf, and several ap- j
plications may be needed through
the season. Alter the beans quit 1
bearing, the vines should be de
troyed.
Aphids, or plant lice, do more
damage than the average gard I
ener thinks. These are small, soft
bodied insects, ranging from a
greenish, reddish, to brown or
fc'.ack in color, which cluster on
the bottom sidrn.of larvaeg and
on growing tips of most all crops
at one time or another. Parasites
and predators, especially the lady
beetles, often keep the lice under
control Nicotine, D. D. T., and
Rotonene usually give satisfac
tory control. Both rhe adult and
the brick-red larvae of the potato
beetle feed on the larvae and ter
minal growth of potatoes. Often
these same beetles feed on to:
maioes, egg plants, peppers, cab
bage and a few other plants.
The adults deposit small yel'
low to orange colored eggs in
batches on the underside of the
leaves. The larvae, when full
grown, go into the soil to pupate.
