SOCIAL. SECURITY NOTES
Things To Remember
By Notley Maddox
??HwmwwuwmwwwwwmwwwwwxiwmwKow
Many students will work dur
ing the coming summer vacation
period. Some of them will remain
at work rather than continue In
| school. Most of those who work,
whether temporarily or perma
nently, will be affected by Social
Security. It would be a good idea,
therefore, to give you a few facts
about how that program works.
Every person who works on a
job covered under Social Security
mu.fl have a Social Security card.
The card may be obtained by cal
ling in person or by writing to
the Social Security Office located
in Gastonia. Applications may be
j obtained also from your local
Post Office.
Your account with the Federal
Government is set up Under the
' name and number shown on your
| Social Security card. Employers
are required to report your wages
i to the Federal Government every
1 3 months. Therefore, it is impor
tant that you show your number
to every employer you work for,
so that he can report your wag
es correctly. Since your future So
cial Security benefits will be bas
ed on the amount <if wages in
your a?Jount, failure to get credit
for all wages will afJect the a
mount of your benefit.
The Old -Age and Survivors In
i surance program which Is gener
ally referred to as "Social Secur
ity," is adnpinistered entirely by
j the Federal Government. This is
I an insurance program and its
i purpose Is to protect workers and
'their families against the inse
I curity of Old -Age and death.
Monthly benefits may be pay
jable to the retired worker ai age
i 65 or later, to nis wife when she
j Is 65, and to his unmarried child
i ren under the age of 18. In <addi

don benefits may be payable
I when the worker dies, regardless ;
[of his age, to hi* 65-year-old wi- 1
dow, to his widow under age 65
I if she has a child entitled to ben
iefits, and to his unmarried ehii- j
dren under the age of 18.
When you go to work lor a new
employer, show him your social j
security card. Don't give' him your
i number from memory. Unless >
your name and number are en- 1
tered on his report exactly asj
i they are on your card, you may j
i not receive proper credit for your -
wages on your Federal 01<l-Age
Insurance account.
Hold on to your social security
card. You will need it when you
apply for a job. It will speed the
payment of benefits when the
time <x>mes for you to file a claim
for benefits.
I Don't lose benefits. Go to your
Social Security Office when you
reach age 65 to inquire about your
retirement benefits. No beeofits
are payable until a claim has
been filed. The local office Is in
the Post Office Building in Gas
tonia. Oi^you may see the Gaa
