SOCIAL SECURITY NOTES Margaret Lowder In August 1949 ? the latest mon th tot which official figures ate available ? more than 2,600,000 Americana were receiving Social Security benefits In excess of $53,000,000 monthly. But our aim is to see that every person eligi ble for benefits files a claim promptly and is promptly paid. There are, however, thousands of widows, orphans, and men and women past 65 who, through if norance of their rights, are fail ing to. collect money due them. One of the most common rea sons for loss o 4 benefits is the be lief that a person must be in need before he can get benefits. Out side means or income in no way affects the right to payment un der the old-age and survivors in surance program. Such benefits are based upon payment which the worker and his employer make to the government in casfo. Exxeepting that It is deducted from the worker's paycheck, it is exactly the same as a cash pay ment on a private. insurance pol icy. In fact, it is a form of insur ance. - I The Social Security Administra tion has more than 500 field of fices and maintains thousands of itinerant stations in smaller com munities which anyone may visit lor write to learn about his social security rights Field Representatives go to the greatest lenghths to locate clai mants. They enlist the aid of pri vate insurance people, employers, fraternal orders, church organiza tions, and funeral directors to help' locate people with claims. In conclusion, let me offer the following advilce to everyone: If you have any quesions about your rights or those of your fam ily, if you are nearing the age 65 whether you intend to retire or not; if the wage earner in $&*&&&&& Bridge Club Hostess Mis.
