F. Wilson, assistant county farm agent for the State College Extension Service. v Wilson says -the club members have obtained some of the best blood lines of the Tamworth breed that can be found in the country. They selected this bacon type, he adds, ?:<ause Tamworth grow rapidly and can feed them selves almost entirely on pasture. Tamworths, he adds, also farrow large litters and feed their pigs well until weaning time. " D. L. Tuttle, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Tuttle, Route 1, Stonevitle, has a registered Tam worth sow that farrowed six male and six female pigs. He didn't lose any. . On . Ladino-orchard grass pastuie the pigs have made outstanding gains. This litter, a prize winner at the Leaksville fair, is now ready for sale. D. L. plans to breed the sow to a reg istered boar for another litter next spring. George Knight, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Knight, Route 4, Reids ville, has .several registered Tamworth sows and produces ex cellent pigs for the local market. Sheltontown Wins "Model Mile' Prize First place in the State-wide Model Mile Roadside Improve ment Contest for iv)50 has been awarded to the Sheltontown community of Surry County, where a number of outstanding projects in community improve ment were completed this year. The contest is sponsored an nually by the State Home dem lonstration organization and o ther State wide groups with the help of the Carolina Motor Club, which provides the prizes. The Sheltontown Home Dem onstration Club had long wanted to make the highway running through the community more at tractive, but somehow they had not had the proper incentive to | get started. W h e ri Mrs. Grace Pope Brown, c<tunty home agent for the State College Extension Service, told the group about the Model Mile contest, the club members saw an opportunity to approach the people of the com munity with a definite program. Mrs. Alvis Love was named leader of the project. She proved to be a "natural" for the job. Mrs. Love says, however, that success was achieved through the cooperation of all the people in the community. One of the goals reached by the club was to have each home owner clean up and haul away all rubbish and trash from the premises. "Unfortunately," says Mrs. Love, "the rubbish reap peared almost as fast as it was hauled away." The owner of an auto garage and "graveyard" .became so in terested in what was being'dor.e that he not only removed the auto parts by truck and -bulldo zer but also removed his entire place of business to a less cdn spicious location. Cleaning up and relandscaping church grounds and painting the local schoolhouse were among the other -accomplishments of the club. The community raised the money to buy the- paint for the school building, and the county furnished the labor.
