Phone 167 Local Ladies Attend Charlotte Luncheon W. S. Lupo, manager of the Charlotte Sears, Roebuck store, was host at a luncheon Friday at the Cardinal restaurant for the Garden Center of Charlotte, which Is sponsored by the Coun cil of North Carolina Garden clubs. This was its initial meet ing. Iris, tulips, and other spring flowers were used on the tables. Mrs. H. C. Sherrlll gave the Invo cation. Mrs. E. A. Palmgren, di rector of district number three of the Garden clubs, presided. Mrs. J. M. Tyler of Kinston, State president of the Garden clubs, was the guest speaker, using ear den centers as her topic. Mi*. Ely Perry of Kinston, State chair man of Garden Centers, and Mrs; J. H. Grey, Jr., of Statesville, in coming director of district num ber three, were also guests. Mrs. W. L. Pressly, president of the Kings Mountain Garden Club was named on the steering com mittee for the organization of the Center. ' ' . . The Charlotte Garden Center will-be in the glass enclosed space on the main floor of Sears Store. Mrs. Pressly and Mrs. J. S. Evans, president of the House and Garden club, attended the luncheon. i Mrs. Shuford Fetes D. A. R. Chapter . Colonel Frederick Hambright chapter of the DA R met Wednes day afternoon at the home of Mrs. Tolly Shuford. Mrs. J. S. Evans gave a talk on "The Golden Isles of Georgia." Members of the Home Makers Club who had entered the dress making contest modeled their dresses. Melba Tindall won first place with Connie Bennett,, win ning second and Jeanelle Med Mrs. B. S. Peeler Hostess To Circle Circle No. 3, Central Methodist church, met Monday night at the home of Mrs. B. S. Peeler, with 14 members present. The living room was lovely, with arrange ments of spring flowers, ming tree, and potted plants. The meeting opened with an lnlspir= lng devotional led by Mr a. Boyer Murray, followed by a Bihle study by Mrs, A. L. Allran. who presented a mother and daugh ter skit, assisted by Mrs. Wilbur Smith. Mrs. H< R. Parton, leader, sion. Members Were urged t>y a note from Mrs. David Hamrlck to no tify all mothers of young babies that baby beds and play pens will be provided soon in order that parents of young fbables may attend the 11 o'clock ser vice on Sundays, with ladies on duty in the nursery to care for the babies. Following ithe business session, delicious refreshments consist ing of Russian tea, sandwiches, potato chips, and cookies, were served by the hostess, assisted ?by several of the members. A delightful period of fellowship followed. The meeting was ad journed by the group repeating the Lord's Prayer. Circle Meets With Mrs. J. E. Littlejohn Cornelia Leavell circle of the Baptist church met Monday night with Mrs. James Littlejohn. -The program was given by Mrs. Howard Ware. Mrs. C. C. Oates presided over the business after which the members enjoyed a fish supper at the Trout Club. Hn, third. When the ladies arrived they assembled in the living room where the floral accent was 5>laced on lovely bouquets of onquils. Several potted plants added color to the appointments. The party was planned as a courtesy to Mrs. W. D. Morrison. Upon her arrival the hostesses gave Mrs. Morrison a corsage of pink and blue carnations. Games were the entertaining feature of the evening. A color note of pink apd blue was carri ed out in the refreshments of cream, cake, nuts and coffee. The highlight of the party was reached when Mrs. Morrison was presented a shower of love ly gifts from the assembled group. Second Baptist Organize Circle The following ladles, Mesdam es Clemmle Ledford, Marvin Wri ght, Jack Stone, Jack Bridges, I. W. Ledford, M. A. Hinson, E. H. Johnson and W. F. Fleming met Monday night at the home of Mrs. Ledford and organized a missionary circle to he known a the Lottie Moon Circle. :-m Mrs. Marvin Wright was elec ted leader. Mrs. I. W. Ledford gave the lesson. The meeting was closed with sentence prayers.. A social period followed, the hostess served refreshments car rying out the Easter motif. Each guest was given an Easter greet ing card. Youth Fellowship To Meet In Lincolnton The Presbyterian Youth fel lowship from the First Presby terian church will meet with the Lincolnton young people Sunday night The Kings Mountain group will have charge of the program. Supper will be served by the Lincolnton group. Favorite I RECIPES j ASP ABACUS SUPREME (Mrs. M. A. Ware) 1 can medium giant asparagus ? reserve liquid. 1 1/2 cups of heavy cream sauce. 1 1/2 cups grated American Snappy Cheese. 2 or 3 hard boiled eggs? cut in thick slices. 1/4 lb. of blanched almonds, cut in half ? reserve a few whole lo decorate top. Cut asparagus in half or thirds and Arrange alternately with eggs and nuts in a baking dish. Placing asparagus, eggs and sprinkle with nuts. Pour over all, thsAot sauce to which the grat e^Heese is added. Place in hot avln and brown lightly, similar to bakirg a macaroni pie. SAUCE 3 tablespoons butter, place in sauce pan, add 3 tablespoons flour, stirring until smooth, add 1^2 cup asparagus liquid. 1 cup milk, stirring to keep smooth. Add the 1 1/2 cup ' of grated cheese stirring constantly ? sprinkle with paprika and pour over Asparagus Supreme. ? ? ? CARAMEL BARS (Mrs. C. D. Blanton) 1/4 lb. butter. '? . 1/2 cup sugar creamed with butter. 2 egg yolks 1 teaspoon vanilla. 1 1/2 cups flour. 1 teaspoon baking powder. Mix and put into greased flat an. Pour over this mixture 1 cup nglish walnuts. Beat 2 egg whites, 1 cup brown sugar, 1 tea spoon vanilla, spread over the mixture. Bake in a moderate oven. Cool and cut in squares. MYF Has Planning Session Sunday evening, following a delicious covered dish supper In the church basement the Senior MYF met in Commission groups to make luture plans. Upon meeting together for reports, the following plans were reported: Worship, reported by Ann May es, wtll consist of evening meet ings each Sunday In March, with a special program on Easter Sunday evening at 7 o'clock, fol lowed by a movie, "Crossroads," if available for that evening. Re creation, reported by Dot Hayes; will consist of a picnic and wor ship service on top of Kings Mountain on Easter Sunday. The group will leave the church at 2:30 p. m. to climb the mountain, as school is out on that day. Com munity Service, reported by Nan Jean Gantt\ will result In a visi tation campaign in March, and a Workshop meeting with Nan Jean in April to make greeting cards for hospital trays. World Friendship, reported by Jo Ann Hayes, will be emphasized by a party made up of games from foreign lands. An interesting worship service, led by Ann Mayes and Shirley Falls, was held after the busi ness session. At 7 o'clock the Se niors met with Sonny Peeler for, youth choir rehearsal, with a large number in the choir for the evening service, rendering the beautiful anthem, "God So Loved the World." , Billy Bumgardner received an MYF emblem ring Sunday morn ing as a' prize for selling the most greeting cards. Second prize, an MYF emblem pin, went to Barbara Gault. Mrs. Costxier W. M. U. Hostess The W. M. U. of the Temple Baptist church met Monday night at the home of Mrs. Daisy Cost ner with 16 members, jme visitor and one new member present. Mrs. O. K. White was in charge of the program.
