Emma Latteis Fined Again t ' ' ' Emma Latters Spencer, elderly Negro woman, stole the show at city court again Monday, as she - was tried before Judge E. A. Har rill for possession of one gallon non tax-paid whiskey for alleg ed purposes of sale. In the Spencer case, Officer P. A. Hawkins testified that Emma told him the liquor had been slipped there. The liquor was found nine feet from the back of the Spencer house. John Mahoney, of Shelby, was defense attorney. She was found guilty and sen tenced to 90 days in Jail suspen ded oh payment of a fine of $100 and costs. Following are portions of the Spencer woman'? testimony un der questioning by Juuge Harrill: Judge Harrill: "Did you know the liquor was there?" She replied: "Had I known it was there I would have run when the law came." Judge Harrill: "Did you drink it?" She replied, ."Why sure, after I flninshed washing and ironing, ^ I was tired, then I drank it." P She testified she didn't know about this liquor but had she found it, it would have been hers. Other judgments of the court Included: V Willie Smith, Negro, charged with assault on his wife, was taxed with the costs. defendants paid a fine of $5.00 each and the costs and three paid costs after pleading guilty to charges of public drunkenness. Mathis Evans, charged with speeding, was taxed with the costs, A charge of driving without li cense and improper passing a gainst W. P. Feur was nol pross ed. Prayer for Judgment was con tinued lor 30 days against Carl Sisk on fe charge of non-support. Walter C. Goode was taxed with the costs after being found guilty of non -support. Flay Pearson was fined $100 and taxed with the costs after being found guilty of attempted assault with a deadly weapon. Willie Davis, Negro of Gaffney, charged with running through a red light, was taxed with the costs. A case against Thomas If. Price, of Charlotte, charged with running through a red light was dismissed. Burben Lee Burris, Negro, charged with possession of three fourths gallon of non-tax-paid whiskey, received a 90-day Jail } sentence suspended upoh pay ment of a fine of $100 and costs. James Hughes, Negro found guilty of driving without a li cense in Recorder's court on June 11, was sentenced to one month Thursday, August 2, the Girl Scouts of the Lutheran church went to Tryon to a Boy Scccut camp. We ate supper beside a lake. We saw some snakes. We went to see the Lake and canoes. Then we saw the pageant of Hi awatha. ?Elaine Burton ? - ? ? ? ? We talked about Boy Scout camp and our camping trip. ?Linda Mitcham, Scribe Final Rites Held For Thompkins Baby Funeral services for Michael Gene Tompkins, six and one-half months old son of Pvt. Hugh and Ruby Jenkins Tompkins, of the Patterson Springs section, were held Wednesday at 3 p. m. at Putnam Memorial Baptist church. The Rev. Lawrence Rob erts officiated, assisted by the Rev. W. L. Pressly. Interment was in Sunset cemetery. The Tompkins baby died in the Shelby hospital Monday from a heart ? condition commonly known as "blue baby". Pvt. Tompkins, son of Mrs. Ruth Pinkard, of Kings Moun tain, is stationed at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. Miss Laverne White To Receive Diploma Miss Laverne White, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. L. White, will graduate from the Shelby Hospi tal School of Nursing Friday night, with exercises to be held at the First Baptist church &t 8:15 o'clock. Dr. Robert Dyer, of the Gardner-Webb College facul ty, will deliver the finals address. After graduation, Miss White will continue working at Shelby hospital In the operating room. In jail.
