Kings Mountain capatllized on three of four scoring opportuni ties last Friday night In Mt. Hol ly to win over the Mt. Holly high "Hawks" by 19 to 0. Fullback Don Bumgardner cracked over for two scores in the final period after Tailback Jimmy Kimmell notched seven points in the second quarter to give Coach Art Welner's Moun taineers the margin of victory. Stellar defensive play by the Welrnermen was a highlight of the game. with Fullback Bill Ruth, Center Bob Hullender and Guard Dickie McMackln doing yeoman duty. . A Kings Mountain first period drive sputtered on the Hawks one-foot line after Tailback Ollie Harris had Intercepted a Mt. Hol ly pass on the losers 37-yard line to set lip the oportunlty. Mt. Holly punted out -on first down but the Mountaineers fail ed to gain on that series and had to punt. The Hawks punted after falling to gain and Wingback Don McCarter took a handoff from Kimmell on the return and raced 40 yards to the Mt. Holly 16-yard line to set up the first score, kimmell bolted over from three yards out to climax a suc cessful drive and added the point after from placement Kimmell set up the next score with a pass interception. On the last play -of the third period, the fleet triple-threat back hauled In a Hawk heave on the Mt Holly 40 and raced to the 16. Bumgard ner picked up 8 over guard and cracked over from the 2-yard marker after a penalty for de fensive holding had moved the ball to that point Kimmell's placement try for point was wide to the left. The final Kings Mountain tally was set up by a blocked punt. Co-Captain Charles Mauney rac ed through to block the Hawk kick and Tackle Guy Fisher pick ed up the spinning ball and al most got away at the Mt Holly 33. Kimmell hit Dickie McMackln with a pass good for 18 yards and Bumgardner made the final five on a plunge through the strong Hawk line. Kimmell's first place ment effort was blocked. but the Hawks were offside on the play but rushed hard again and also blocked his second try. PXJtY-OT-MJlY First Quarter Kings Hountaln won the toss and elected to receive. Tackle Joe Huffstetler's boot went to Quar terback Paul McGinnls on the KM 25 and he picked up five yards on the return. Kimmell hit left tackle for 6 and missed Bum gardner with a toss. Bumgardner hit the middle for 4 and a first. Kimmell raced around right end lor 13 yards and another first. McCarter added three on a re verse, Bumgardner failed to gain, McGinnls added a yard and Kim ? Fullback Johnny Wyke hit the middle lor 2 and Tailback Rob ert Lee added 4 at right tackle. Lee's toss was intercepted by Harris on the Hawk 37 after End Don Flowers had rushed hard on the play. Bumgardner hit the line for 7 and Klmmell tossed to McGlnnis for 12 and a first on the MH 18. Bumgardner added 2 at guard and Kimmell hit for 6 and 4 for a first. Kimmell made 4 and Bum gardner failed to gain in two tries as the period ended. Second Quarter KimmeU's drive around his right flank went for 2 yards to the one-foot line and the Hawks took over on downs. Lee punted out-of-bounds on his 33. Harris* passes to Bumgardner and Flower's were incomplete. An other Harris toss, this time to End Johnny Riser, fell incom plete but both teams were guilty of personal fouls. Kimmell lost 5 trying to pass and punted Into the end zone on the next down. Lee failed to gain at tackle and picked up a yard to his right flank. Lee's pass to Dickie Car penter fell incomplete, KM re fusing an offside penalty on the play. Lee punted to Kimmell on the KM 44 and Kimmell handed off to McCarter who raced to the MH 16. Bumgardner added 2 into the line but his three yard gain was cancelled when MH drew five yairds for offside. Kimmell made 6 and a first to the three from where he cracked over for the first score. Kimmell's placement try for point was good and KM led 7-0. Lee took Center Ken Davis' klckoff on his 10 and raced into the clear but Mauney hauled him down on the MH 39 after a 29 yard run back. Wingback Batche lor picked up 7 on a reverse and Lee added 5 for the Hawks initial first down. Lee hit the line for 2 and passed 'over the heads of his intended receivers. Wyke picked up 2 and Lee punted to the KM 10, Kimmell racing back 21 yards. Kimmell lost a yard and Mc Carter picked up 19 and a first on reverse as the half ended! Third Quarter Davis tried an on-sides kick that went long to the 30 and Mar tin Holloway ran it back 10. Wyke picked up 2 but the play was called back and MH penaliz ed 15 for clipping. George Coff land picked up 3 on a reverse but Wyke lost 2 on a line smash. Lee's pass to . D. Carpenter fell incomplete and oh the next down he punted to the KM 42, McCar ter running it back to the KM 45. McCarter added a yard but Guard Ronald Meadows broke through to spill Kimmell for an 8-yard loss, Kiser picked up 4 and Kimmell punted into the end I zone. Lee picked up 6 over tackle and passed Incomplete to Holloway. Wyke hit the line for 4 and a first. Lee added 4 at tackle and 3 over guard and passed incom plete. Lee punted to the KM 36 and Flowers ran the short kick back a yard. . Kimmell ran the left flank for 3 and Bumgardner hit the line for 6 and 4 and a first. McGlnnls picked up 2 over tackle and Kim mell's pass to McGinnis fell In complete. McCarter was held to a yard on a reverse and Kimmell punted out-of-bounds on the MH 13. Tailback Richardson hit right tackle for a yard and Harris broke up his punt formation pass to Coffland. Richardson tossed good to Holloway who fumbled and Batchelor recovered on the MH 43 for a first. Coffland lost a yard on a reverse to his left, McCarter broke up Richardson's pass to Coffland and Kimmell intercepted his next toss on the MH 40 and raced to the 16 as the period ended. Fourth Quarter Bumgardner hit tiie middle for 8 and Kimmell's three-yard run was nullified when MH drew a penalty to the MH one for defen sive holding. Bumgardner crack ed over the score. Kimmell's1 try for point was wide. Score ? KM 13. MH? 0. Kimmell's kickoff went out-of bounds and the ba?l put .in play 20 yards from the kicking point, on the MH 40. Coffland picked up a yard on a reverse to his left. Lee's pass fell incomplete and Batchelor lost 4 on a reverse. Mauney broke through to block L?e's punt. Randall Bites Held Satuday Funeral services for Mrs. Pin kie Lee Randall, 51, who died-at her home on route two after sev eral months of illness, were held Saturday at 3 o'clock at El Beth el Methodist church. Burial was in Bethlehem Baptist church cemetery. Rev. R. F. Swink and the* Rev. T. V/, Fogleman officiated. Mrs. Randall was a native of Cleveland County and a member of El Bethel Methodist church and was formerly employed by Keeter*s Department store. She was the daughter of the late Pinkney and Susan Whlsnant Randall. She Is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Hill Lowery of Kings Moun tain; a brother, Alex Randall of Kings Mountain; four sisters, Mrs. Floyd Herndon and Mrs. Theodore Herndon, both of Kings Mountain; Mrs. R. L. Forbls of Shelby, and Mrs. G. A. Brown of Liberty. She is also survived by three grandchildren. Final RUei Held For Otis Lee Moore Funeral services for Otis Lee Moore, 47, a former citizen of Kings Mountain, were conducted Tuesday at Abernethy Memorial Methodist church In Newton. Bu rial was In the Claremont ceme terv. Mr. Moore died in Elizabeth, N. J. Friday. He la the son of the late Tho mas and Minnie Yates Moore and la survived by his' wife, Mr*.
