An all-time rec ord for Blue Ridge Parkway use was set in the 1951 travel year when 2,454,924 people in 722.685 cars rode this highway skimming the highest mountains in Eastern America. Supt. Sam P. VVeems said this was the first time that Parkway visitors exceeded 2.000,000 in a year and noted the contrast with the 291.273 visitors recorded in the first travel report in 1939. The new record represents an increase of 34.4 percent over the 1,825,491 visitors in 1950. Septem ber, last month of the travel year, brought 318,035. compared with 229,270 in September of last year. Heaviest visitation came in Ju ly, with 440.071, followed by Au gust, with 432,844, , Other top months were June. September, and October, in that order. Large Sum Spent For Sheep Stock Sheop are making a comeback in North Carolina. Extension animal husbandry specialists at State College say Tar Heel farmers have spent ap proximately $27,500 to buy new sheep stock during the past year. A large part of this was used for purebred animals. Right now, the specialists add, is a good time to start in the sheep business .especially for far mers who have guod Ladino clo ver-pasture and a place to corral their sheep at night. The North Carolina Purebred Sheep Breeders Association, head ed by J. W. Norris, sponsored three sales during the summer at which 63 purebred rams were sold for $9,550 and 196 bred was broUght $4,860. At a sale held this fail in connection with the State Fair, 37 bred ewes were sold for $6,138.30, averaging $165.90 per head. The top animal In the bred ewe sale, grown and consigned by Alex Meek and 3on 0/ Burkes Garden, Va., was bought by Wade Campbell of Taylorsville for $320. In addition to the sales spon sored by the breeders' association, the N^rth ' Carolina Department of Agrlcultu '? has helped farm ors purchase 1,555 Western ewes for a total price of $6,951.70.
