Attractive bouquets of pink chrysanthemums, dried flower arrangements and seasonal fruit accented the furnishings throu ghout the home. Duplicate bridge was the game of the afternoon and several pro gressions were in play. When cards were laid aside, scores were tallied. Mrs. Carl Mauney won high score with Mrs. John McGill and Mrs. Sam Davis ty ing for second high. The hostess was assisted in serving a complete congealed salad course with coffee, passing Individual blueberry tarts topped with ice cream. Those playing other than club members were Mrs. Carl Mauney, Mrs. John McGill and. Mrs. George Ware. Farewell Party Given For Miss Hawkins Miss Betty Hawkins, who left Monday for Seattle, Washington where she will be married to Bob by Crawford, was feted Saturday night at a farewell party and a lingerie shower given for her by her sister, Mrs. Robert White aides, at her home on Crescent Hill Road. Bouquets of white and yellow chrysanthemums lent a festive . atmosphere to the setting of the party. At refreshment time the hostess served cookies, potato ch-us, nuts, mints and coffee. The honoree received many nice gifts. Miss Joan Mauney Wins First Award Miss Joan Mauney, a Senior at Central High school in Ruther fordton, won the first place a-! ward In the County Essay con test, "I Speak For Democracy". Joan. Mayes was guest speaker Tuesday afternoon at the meeting of the Bessemer City Garden Ctyb when tt met with Mrs. Carl W. Howari at the home of her mother, Mre. S. O. Sexon. Mrs. Mayes spoke on "Christ mas Decorations". , , Gleaners Class Meets With Mrs. J. B. Falls The Gleaners Class of the First Baptist church met Monday night at the home of Mrs. J. B. Falls with 15 members present. Mrs. J. B. Falls conducted the devotional with Mrs. Bryan Hord praying the opening prayer. It was decided to have the De cember meeting on the 18th at the home of Mrs. Howard Ware. For the social period games had been planned by Mrs. Clyde Jolly. A sweet course was served with cottee. Six Cases Heard In Monday Term City Recorder's court had a busy day Monday afternoon after the holiday weekend when six cases were heard and tried and seven were continued until the December 3rd term of court. Judge E. A. Harrill presided. One defendant was tried and found guilty of public drunken ness. Other cases included: Harold Dean Smith, age 17, charged with operating a motor vehicle with an improper muff ler, was fined $10 arid costs. Clyde Taylor, age 16, charged with malicious damage to prop erty, was given a 90-day sen tence suspended upon the pay ment of a fine of $25 and costs. Jimmy Binnix, age 16, and Don Blnnix, Jr., age 21, each charged with malicious damage to prop erty, were each given a 90-day sentence suspended upon the pay ment of a fine of $25 and costs. A capias was issued for Flay Kimbrell, charged with slander of woman. Cases continued included: Garcie C. Harris, charged with public drunkenness and illegal Personals Mrs. Milton Fryer of Atlanta spent the holidays with relative" in Charlotte and Kings Mountain. Jack Crouch and Miss Betty Ledford,. students at Gardner Webb spent the holidays with their respective parents. Misses Joyce Foster, Lois Franks, Betty Hawkins and Sue Slpes were dinner and spend-the night guests Wednesday of Mrs. Wllma Neal. Otto Hehn of Charlotte was a Kings Mountain visitor Monday. Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Darracott spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Robert Darracott of Anderson. Mrs. George Setzer of Crest view, Fla., spent several days last week with her sister, Mrs. B. A. Murray. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Fortune and family of Hickory spent the Thanksgiving holidays with rel atives In Kings Mountain. Collins, who takea a walk out of Joors every day the weather is line, traveled to Brattleboro, VL, this fall to attend ' a Central Vermont Rail way pensioners' meeting and had a 'fine time" because the trip "didn't tire me at alt." The old engineer wis born July 24. 1856, and went to work as a C. V. fireman in 1887. Two years later he was promoted to engineer md ran trains between New London ;nd Brattleboro. Lawing. son of Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Lawing. of Kings Mountain, recently comple ted the intermediate speed radio operators course conducted by the 23rd AAA AW Battalion of 1 I . ' 11 " " the 8th Infantry Division's spec-] ialist training regiment at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. During twelve weeks of train ing students learned to install and operate a temporary radio and telegraph communications system in the field. In addition to the Morse code, trainees were taught basic cod ing for radio messages and the use of Hags for visual communi cation. Improved equipment and ad vanced drilling practices in the oil industry make it easier to drill a 12, 000-foot well today than it was to drill an 8,000-foot well in 1935.
