Here is the information I pro
mised on varieties and planting
of dahlias. For the beginner I
suggest the. following varieties
which have done well for me:
Jane Cowl, large bionze; Chero
kee Brave, large red: Michigan
White, medium while;- Jersey
Beauty, medium pink; Edgar
Guest, large yellow; Kins David,
large purple; Mrs. E. J. medium
pink; Kirsten . Flagstad, large
orange; World Event, large pink.
Of. the miniature typo l ean
recommend the following: Mar
ket (.lory, white Faun, Little
l.emon Drop, Andrea's Orange,
Ike, Fuchsia Gem and Little
?Benches. Of the pompon type, the
following are the host-:. Little
Edith, Snowcl.id, Betty Anne. Yel
low Gem. Sherry. Ttom, Morning
Mist, and Ila.
Dahlias will grow well on any
soil that will produce good Irish
potatoes. The principal require
ments are that the soil be well
drained, easily worked, and con
tains a good amount of organic
matter so that It will hold mois
ture.
About a week before planting,
work Into the soil five pounds of
5-10 5 or <>8-6 fertilizer per 100
square feet of garden space to be
used. The large varieties should
be spaced 3 1-3 feet apart each
direction or in rows 4 feet apart
and hills 2 12 to 3 feet apart in i
the row. The miniatures and pom
pons should be 2 1-2 feet apart ,
each way. or in rows 3 feet apart j
with hiljs 2 feet apart.
I>ig holes six inches deep and i
large enough to accomodate the
roots to be planted. It Is advisa
ble to drive a 5 foot stake at each
hill before planting. Small roots
are as good as large roots, and
probably better. Vou will find an
eye or sprout at the stem end of
the root. In planting, place the
root flat in the bottom of the
hole with the sprout or eye fac
ing up and about 3 Inches from
the stake. In sandy soils the hole
may be filled to the top, but in
clay soils It may be best to fill
in 2 to 3 inches over the root un
til the sprout has come up. Then
the rest of the soil may be filled
tin.
Dahlias should be cultivated
once a week unless a mulch . is
used. Four to six inches of straw
mulch will take the place of cul
tivation. With the large flowered
varieties, as soon as the stem
has developed 3 sets of leaves the
top should be pinched out to
cause the plant to branch out. As
soon as the first buds develop
apply a handful of garden fertili
zer around each plant and again
about September 1. Keep the
plants tied to the stake to pre
vent dtfmage by storms.

"National Home Demonstra
tion Week, 'April 27-May 3, fo
cuses the attention of the people
of the nation on the great con
tribution that home demonstra
tion members are making," says
David S. Weaver, director of the
State College Extension Service.
"In North Carolina," says Wea
ver, "home demonstration clubs
have established themselves as
one of the finest ways to bring
to- the attention of their members
and others the many advantages
'being made in homemaklng, and
understanding of family rela
tionships and community devel
opment.
"Everyone recognizes their in
fluence upon all of the people
as well as upon the citizens of
the future. While the principles
of better family living that are
applied to such things as nutri
tion clothing, housing, recrea
tion, and spiritual development
are recognized, another great in
fluence may be oftentimes over
looked. I refer to the opportunity
which mothers and wives have
in teaching and in practicing tol
erance, broadmindedness, and
the dignity of the individual.
" 'As the twig Is bent, so grows
the tree* could well be translated
'As the child Is taught, so grows
the nation.' This Is why the
theme of National Home Demon
stration Week, "Today's Home
Builds Tomorrow's World,' is so
aptly chosen while our nation
and the world are strained by
tensions probably with no para
llel In human history.
"Schools, churches, and youth
programs contribute greatly to
the development of character
and strength in the child, but
none can touch the Influence of
a mother and a good home.
"The opportunity foe home
demonstration workers and oth
ers to intensify their efforts In
line with this year's slogan Is
unlimited. Certainly the reward
for such Increased effort will be
great.
"Our 69,48 J. members are dedl
cated to the task of making the
rural homes of America strong.
Their achievements In the past
show their ability to do the job
and their wock stands as a shin
ing example of what a coordinat
ed plan, properly executed, can
accomplish. As workers in the
home and as professional work
ers in home demonstration pro
grams celebrate National Home
Demonstration Week, the rest of
the nation can well afford to
pause and pay tribute to'them.
