monthly social security payments
in Gaston, Cleveland arid Lincoln
Counties, over 3,000, or 56 per
cent, are wives, widows, children
or parents of insured wage ear
ners or self employed people.
Miss Margaret H. Lowder,
Manager of the Gastonja social
security office, cited these figures
today as evidence of the value of
the family insurance- protection
through the Federal old-age and
survivors insurance program.
"A surprisingly large number
of people still thing of social se
curity only as a retirement sys
tem," Miss Lowder said. She
pointed out that regular monthly
payments to the Widows' and chil
dren of deceased workers are of
ten the means of enabling the sur
vivors to remain together as a
family unit.

To Illustrate the family insur
ance protection, Miss Lowder
mentioned a not unusual case of
a local family now receiving
monthly survivors benefits. The
wage earner died in July, leaving
a widow and twin sons, age 5.
Based upon his average monthly
wage of $270 ince 1950, the widow
and children became entitled to
$150 a month starting with July.
Under recent changes in the law,
this amount Was increased to $161
a month in September.
Payments will be made until
the twins reach 18. The total "sum
of $21,450 will have been paid to
the family by that time. If the
widow -has not re married by the
time she reaches age 65. she will
then be eligible to further mon
thly payments of $60.40 for the
rest of her life.
Miss Lowder invited persons
desiring information about re
tirement or survivors benefits to
see the representative from the
Gastonia social security office
who visits the City Hall at Kings
Mountain the first and third Wed
nesday of each month at 10:00
