The reporter who scooped the
world with the story of the first
airplane flight in 1903 was pre
sent at Kill Devil Hill December
17 for ceremonies launching the
golden anniversary year of avia
tion.
He is Harry P. Moore of Nor
lolk, Virginia, and at the invita
tion of the Kill Devil Hill Memo
rial Society he made his first ap
pearance at the Society's annual
celebration .of the Wright Bro
thers' flight from Kill Devil Hill
on December 17, 1903.
As a 20-year-old cub reporter
on the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot in
1903, Moore recognized a good
news story when he learned from
a source he has never revealed
that Wilbur and Orville Wright
had successfully flown their gaso
line-driven aircraft. He wrote the
story, but, many papers refused
to publish it. His own paper car
ried at as a front page spread un
?der an eight-column headline:
I'Flylng Machine Soars Three
Miles in teeth of High Wind Over
Sandhills and Waves at Kitty
Hawk on Carolina Coast." At the
top of the newspaper's front page
was the line "The Flight Thut
Couldn't Be Made ? But Was."
Moore $till writes a column of
waterfront incidents for the .Vir
ginian Pilot, using the title "Old
Be*2 Hansen," Hhe has been in
terviewed by many other writers,
and during the silver anniversary
year of aviation in 1928 the As
sociated Press released a widely
published feature story about
"the man who scooped the world".
The Kill Devil Hill Memorial
Society mapped plans not only
for a celebration December 17,
but for observance of the entire
anniversary year between that

The 60-foot marble and granite
Wright Memorial now i.-.arks the
site of the first flight. It is a na
tional memorial maintained by
the National Park Service.
Of tobacco growers voting in
the recent burley referndum on
November 22, 98.5 percent asked
for quotas. In North Carolina, 8,
565 growers cast votes.

IRISTMAS just couldn't help
being the event of events in
Norway when grandmother was a
girl.
Without exaggeration, preffnra
tion for Christmas actually began
six months before December 24
Everything which was used
food, clothing, household furnish
ings? was prepared in the home.
Even the leather for shoes was
tanned from hides raised on the
homestead.
The cloth for apparel, from the
skin out. was woven on . hand
looms. Cobblers came to the house
and made the shoes, dressmakers
and tailors came. Everyone in
the household had to have a new
wardrobe for Christmas and, since
tailors and cobblers and dress
makers could not be. at all places
at Once, it was necessary to fcet
an early start.
When the butchering was fin
'shed ? in October or November ?
the suet was melted and the can
dles were made. The children
1 1 ways had a hand in making the
little one.? for use on the Chrisi
mas tree. And they usually made
'one which had three prongs which,
plated at the very top of the tree,
^presented the three wise men.
The Rose of Christmas
