Negro News By Mrs. Cannie Gordon 105 Carpenter Street Mr. and Mrs. Plato Perkins, Miss Geraldine Harris and Eli jah Ross visited L. A. Perkins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Perkins, Sunday at Fort Jackson where he Is stationed. Mrs. Ross and children visited relatives In Chester, S. C. Mr. and Mrs. William Lyan had as their guest Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Hall, Recently. Carl L. Bennix was presented in his senior voice recital April 12 by Beckwith Schol of Music. He is a candidate for a certificate in voice from the music school. During the Intermission, pre sentations were 'made. Mrs. M. D. Beckwith, school president, honored Mr. Bennix, as being the .first voice graduate in the school's eight-year history. Mrs. Louise McKenale, presi dent of the Beckwith Voice Guild presented Mr. Bennix with a gift from the student body. Dr. Edson E. Blackman, chairman of the trustee board, told of the school's progress, and gave Mr. Bennix a gift from himself and his wife. 'the youth also received gifts from his family and friends. Bennix is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Bennix, Sr., of Kings Mountain, where he is a graduate of Davidson high school. There he was president of the junior class chorus, and was editor-in-chief of the senior annual. He attended Livingstone Collego for one year. For the past three years, he has studied piano and voice with Mrs. Beckwith. He Is pianist for the Bynum Chapel AME Zioh Church in Kings Mountain. Those attending the recital from Kings Mountain were Rev. White, pastor of Bynum Chapel, Mr. and Mrs. Spurgeon Mceks, Miss Coleen Cherry, Miss Odessa Shield, Miss Grace Boyd, Miss Mai Alice Ross, Mr. and Mrs. John M. Leach, Sandra Blalock, Otis Thombs, Mrs. Martha Ann Taylos, Mrs. Annie M. Byers. Mrs. Magnolia Owens?and Jeap Taylor, also a student at Beckwith school. Mr. Taylor served as ush er for the recital. The Kings Mountain Home Demonstration Club met at the home of Mrs. Nancy Brown on Watterson Street. The business session was opened with the presi dent in charge. After the session, the county agent. Miss McVea, gave a demonstration on arrange ment of flower planting, also shrubberyln the yard. This was very Interesting to all housewiv es. There were sixteen members present. At the close of the meeting, 'the hostess served sandwiches, cook ies, and coffee. Funeral services for Mr. Pink Crawford were held Monday at 2:30 at Bynum Chapel A. M. E. ZIoji Church. Rev. A. M. Williams was the officiating minister. Sur viving are his wife, Mrs. Eda Crawford; one daughter, Mrs. Quebie Crawford; three sisters, and one brother, Ben Crawford of Grover. Burial was in the church cemetery. Tigers Open Home Season Saturday Klngt Mountain Tigers, Negro baseball club, will open the 1953 home season at City Stadium on Saturday night at 8 p. m. against the Shelby Elk Raiders. The Haiders defeated the Kings Mountain team at Shelby last Saturday night by 7-2 and drop ped the season's opener two weeks ago to Clover, S. C., by 3-2. Manager William Orr announc ed this week addition o i several key piayers to the team, with some of last season's players back again. Several players from Gas tonia have been added. In the loss to Shelby, David Adams gave up seven hits while striking out six and walking only one. Clarence Adams led the stlckwork with a double and two singles and Clyde Taylor stole home for one score. . Donald F. Thompson In U. S. Marines Donald F. Thompson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Thompson of 121 Oriental ave., has been en listed in the Marine Corps and assigned to the Marine Corps Re cruit Depot at Parrfs Island, S. Hickory Church Scene Saturday Of Lutheran Meet The annual Children of the Church Convention of the Evan gelical Lutheran Synod of North Carolina will be held at 21on Lu theran Church, Hickory, N. C., on Saturday, April 25, beginning at 10:00 a.m., Rev. J. L. Lackey an nounced this week. Mrs. Mabel B. Fenner, an as sociate secretary of the Board of Parish Education of the United Lutheran Church In America, will be the speaker. Her topic will be "The New Children's Program". Jurgen sen, Marine recruiter at Charlotte announced today. Thompson will be assigned to a' ground, sea or air unit of the Ma rines upon completion of a 10 week training period at Parrls Island. He will then become eligi ble' to attend one of more than 140 specialist schools offering Ma rines training in 470 Job skills. A former student of Kings Mountain High School, Thompson was employed by Marlowe's Tire Recapping Shop. William S. Rhyne Promoted By Marines P ARRIS ISLAND, S. C. ? Ma rine Private First Class William Scott Rhyne, 18, son of Mrs. Net tle Hope, Kings Mountain, N. C., was promoted to his present rank when he graduated from "boot camp" at this East Coast Marine Corps Recruit Depot. During the past eight weeks of intensive training and as a result of field experience and classroom lectures, the new Marine has be come well versed in such mili tary subjets as precision drill, first aid, hygiene and field tactics. He climaxed his recruit train ing by winning the sharpshooter medal on the rifle range when he fired a score of 210 out of a possi ble 250 during his weapons train ing.
