Barbecue Scheduled For Country Club July's regular monthly Club Night party on July 4 at Kings Mountain Country Club will take the form of an old-fashioned bar becue, Tolly Shuford, social com mittee chairman, said yesterday. The piece de resistance will be served by Red Bridges, the well known barbecue specialist from Shelby at $1.50 per person, Mr. Shuford said. Reservations are requested as far in advance as possible. Pressly To Conduct Devotional Program Rev. W. L. Pressly, pastor of Boyce Memorial ARP church, will conduct ' the morning devotional hour for Station WKMT for the week of June 29, It was announc ed this week. On June 17, Mrs. Leona Wells Alkinson of Mountain street, was traveling west on East King street. Another vehicle, driven by John J. Quinn of route 2, was go ing west. The vehicle driven by Mrs. Alkinson hit the Quinn auto mobile. On June IS two cars collided at the intersection of City and Ridge streets. Drivers of the cars were listed as Austin Moore , Wilson of route 3 and Robert Eugene Mor ris of Shelby. None was injured and no char ges were reportedy preferred. In vestigating officers were City Of ficers, Gladen and Sanders. Sterchi's Fourth In G-E Sales Test Sterchi's, of Kings Mountain, placed fourth among the 38 stores of the Sterchl chain in the recent General Electric Pot-of Gold sales contest, and Salesman Henderson Herndon placed four th among salesmen in individual contest, according to announce ment received from Knoxville, Tenn., headquarters this week. The six-week contest ended June 13 and was based on a point system, whereby various G-E pro ducts gave a particular total of points for store and salesman. Placing ahead of Kings Moun tain's Sterchi branch were Gas tonia, Rome, Ga., and Forest City, J. Kennon Blanton, manager of the Kings Mountain branch said. Franlrie Henson Wins Jaycee Race In a "red. white and blue" finish, Frankie Henson, David Plonk, and Ruben Bridges won first, second and third place in the first annual Jayceos "Kiddie Car" race held at 2 p. m. Wed nesday afternoon. Henson was driving a red racer, Plonk a white racer and Bridges a blue racer. Winners were awarded prizes, donated by Victory Chevrolet Company, The Kings Mountain champion was sponsored in the race by Dean Buick Company. Plonk, the runner-up, was sponsored by Plonk Motor Company and Bridges, the third place winner, by the Kings Mountain Herald. All six of the boys who raced in Wednesday's contest are en tered in the annual Charlotte Soap Box Derby, to be run In Charlotte derby. In addition to the three win ners, Edward Barry, sponsored by Baxter Paper Corp. of Grover, Vick Smith, sponsored by Victory Chevrolet Co., and Reggie Paint er, sponsored by Marlowe's, are also set for the Charlotte race. Two boys who did not race Wednesday are also entered in the Charlotte derby. Tony Kirby, sponsored by Bridges Hardware, had a crackijp In a trial run on Tuesday and could not get his racer repaired in time for the Xmgs Mountain contest. Bill Ware, sponsored by Ed Earfey, did not complete his rac er in time for the race here. In the first heat Wednesday, Plonk moved his racer out front to beat Barry. In the second heat, Henson nos ed' out Smith in a photo finish as both racers moved at a fast clip over- the finish line. In the third heat, Bridges crossed the finish line a car length ahead of David Mull, driv ing for Painter, to win the flight. Painter is expected to be ready for the Charlotte race, having suffered a broken collar bone several weeks ago. In the championship heat, Hen son crossed the finish line after breaking away from the other two racers about 100-feet from the goal. He was about a car-and one-half behind Plonk with Bridges trailing about the same distance. The Charlotte Derby is sche duled to begin at 1 p. m. next Wednesday, with time trials to get underway at 11:30 a. m. Charles Dixon is chairman of the race committee from 'he Junior Chamber of Commerce, which is assisting Charlotte Soap Box Derby officals in the big two state contest on July 1. Mr. Stowe, radio and tele vision repairman, and T. W. Grayson, Kings Mountain Jew eler, slipped off Friday after noon for a try at the Cataw ba River's offerings in the rod-and-xeel department. The unusual catch was ex plained as ictlbws: Mr. Stowe was wishing with' a very small, two-b.aded spoon - spinner plug and about 20-in ches of leader, w'.th a sinker measuring cn inch and one quarter about half-way on the leader. Getting a good strike, Mr. Stowe said he reeled the catch in and after boating it, discov ered the plug hanging free. The fish had the sinker wed ged in it's mouth, hooked as solidly, or probably more so, than If it had hit the hooks "That crappie must have had elevator trouble," the former flying instructor went on, "or he must have been a speed demon? he missed that plug by a foot."
