Burger, president of The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, has urged the nation's food in dustry to strive for greater effi ciency in its operations in order to further narrow the spread be tween farm and retail prices. In a statement launching a month-long celebration of the na tion's oldest food chain's 94th an niversary, Mr. Burger cautioned the industry against wasteful practices that might tend to in crease the cost of food to con sumers or reduce returns to pro ducers. Mr. Burger cited three major areas in which the industry should seek Improved perfor rnance: 1. Narrow the spread between farm and retail prices. 2. Reduce waste and spoilage of food. 3. Avoid both merchandising practices and types oj merchan dise that will reduce efficiency and Increase operating costs. Mr. Burger said that modern refrigeration, improved storage, transportation and handling ope rations in recent years have re sulted in a substantial reduction in the waste and spoilage of food, but that this was still one of the most challenging problems for the entire food industry.
