Thte Compact girls came out of the opener against Carver high of Rutherfordton on December 8 with a 23-23 deadlock, while the boys dropped a close 31-33 con test in the thrilling games. Kings Mountain high school's varsity basketball teams, get ting off earlier than usual on the Western AA cage grind, are hosts to teams from Cool Springs high of Forest City at Central gym nasium Friday night. The opener is to start at 7 p. m. Coach Don Parker is hack at the helm of the boys club, with the girls beginning the season under a new coach/ Miss Eliza beth. Collertte, who produced a championship club at Troutman last year. Miss Collette did not come to Kings Mountain as the girls bas ketball coach but took over the position several weeks ago. Ev erette Carlton, last year's coach, is working with ninth grade teams this year. The boys club features Center Ollie Harris and Forward Milton Hope back from last season's starting quint The pair will be in the starting five Friday, along with Richard George and Don McCarter, a pair, of outstanding reserve guards last season, and Konnle Layton, rangy forward. Other members of the club are Eddie Goforth, George Harris, Mearl Valentine, David Hullen der. Earl Marlowe, Bobby Llttle john. Charles Yelton, Winfred White, Jerry Ross and Bobby Raines. The girls club is paced by six letter winners from the 1953 team. Buddy Medlin, Gente Stone and- Walt Harmon each scored 12 points. , Prospects for a successful sea son looked brighter with the ap pearance of Gene Goforth and Carl Wlesener, two 6' 6" men with a lot of basketball knowledge and experience. Gene, a former pro baseball pitcher, is well known locally, attended K. M. high and played basketball on the fast semi-pro team of several seasons back. Carl attended the U. oil Tennessee. The official colors of the re creation teams are red, white and blue and all uniforms Jiavte been donated by local merchants. Uniforms for the Midgets and Intermediates were given by the Jaycees and Kiwanis. Tentative schedules for the younger groups include games with Gastonla, Concord, Rock Hill, Cramerton, Charlotte, Hickory and Newton. Practice will be held at the gym Saturday from nine to ten-thirty for the midgets and from ten thirty to twelve for the interme diates.
