the issue was never in doubt.
Taking the opening kickoff,
the winners marked up their
first tally of the season in eight
plays, Fullback Mearl Valentine
lugging the ball the final yard
in a 62- yard march. Tackle Ken
Cook added, the first of six con
secutive conversions from place
ment before the game was much
more than five minutes old.
Kings Mountain won the toss
and chose to receive, the host
team electing to defend the east
goal. Valentine brought Tackle
Larry Polk's kickoff back 12
yards to the Kings Mountain 38
and picked up 8 yards on the
first play of the game. Halfback
Earl Marlowe drove for 10 yards,
Smith went for 2 and 12 and
Marlowe drove 16 yardd to the
Jackets 14. Valentine made the
goal in three drives, going 10, 3
and 1.
The Mountaineers kicked off
and held the Jackets to five
yarcls in three plays, forcing
Halfback Jim Forester to punt.
Taking over on their own 45
yard line, the Mountaineers add
ed their' second touchdown on
two quick plays/Valentine went
through the line for 34 yards and
Harris passed to Halfback Char
les Smith for the score, Smith re
ceiving the toss on the losers' 10
and skipping over double stripe.
Less than 10 minutes had elap
sed since the kickoff when Cook
I split the uprights for a 14-0 lead.
By the start of the second quar*
ter. Kings Mountain was off on
another scoring drive. Bessemer
City netted minus two yards on
three plays and Quarterback
Sidney Woody punted out, Smith
returning to the Jackets 48 to set
the stage.
The runs in the third drive
went: Valentine 5, Smith 5 (off
setting a penalty), Valentine 8;
and Marlowe, in the key play,,
(fourth down after two incom
plete passes by Harris) 12 to the
Jackets' 19. Valentine added 3

Smith made a key run in the
drive, streaking 24 yards to the
Jacket 20 to set the stage for two
Valentine thrusts.
Guard Charles Yelton recover
ed a Jacket fumble on the kick
off but Halfback Howard Payne
intercepted a Harris heave to re
gain the ball. The Jackets fumb
led and Cook recovered on the
Jacket 29 to st>t the stage for
Kings Mountain's fifth score,
wiuch took only one play, possi
bly the most skillfully executed
of the game. Quarterback Hanls
practically smothered by the de
fensive right end, flipped the
bail out to Smith who raced 26
yards for the touchdown.
Bessemer City showed some
life at this point but failed to
notch a sustained drive against
the Carlton reserves after rack
ing up a first down No. 3 in the
game, as ihe third period ended.
With Sub -Quarterback Johh
McGinnis directing the second
string club, the Mountaineers
failed to gain in a series begin
ning the final chapter and Mar
lowe punted out. The Jackets
came back with another first
down but again were forced to
punt. McGinnis' cliLb again fail
ed to gain and Marlowe punted
out to Fullback J. C. Hill who
fumbled, Halfback Curtis George
recovering for the Mountaineers
on the Jacket 44. Mike Houser
picked up 10 yards to set the
stage for the final touchdown,
McGinnis racing 34 yards to pay
dirt.
With a mixture of second and
third stringers In the lineup,
Kings Mountain ran out the
clock by holding the losers to a
four-yard gain in five rushes,
Forester picking up the Jackets
fifth first down with a 10-yard
run and Payne recovering a
fumble for a 9-yard loss In the
last two plays.
Coach Carlton used 28 players
in the game, with Eddie Gofor
th sitting the opener out on the
bench and Halfback Harold
Jackson out with a chipped bone
In his foot. Both are lettermen.^

The Mountaineers will be

mer City high's Yellow Jackets
42-0 at Bessemer City last Friday

Mt. Holly has played two gam
es to date, losing the opener to
West Mecklenburg 7-0 but com
ing 'back strong last Friday night
to down Stanley 22-6.
Kings Mountain won last year

The Mountaineers are expected
to be strengthened for the home
opener with the return of Letter
man Eddie Goforth to fulltime
doty. Goforth, a stellar defensive
man, underwent a kidney oper
ation several weeks ago and
worked in Jight equipment last
week.
Only reported casualty of the
opener with the Jackets was End
Charles Bridges, who suffered a
fractured nose. He is expected to
be ready for duty, however,
wearing a helmet guard for pro
tection.
Mt. Holly reported loss of ma
ny key players from last season
mer City mentor. He and Ken
Bost replaced George Tate who
left the Jackets along with a
half-dozen 1953 starters, Includ
ing Halfback Ken Metzger who
is now in the U. S. Marine Corps.
