PollReportShowsDemocrats Would Retain House Control By Kenneth Fink, Director Princeton Research Service PRINCETON, N. J. — Results of the latest nationwide “trial Meat” of voter preference for Congress (House of Representa tives) by Princeton Research Service’s United States Poll show Democratic candidates for the House of Representatives run ► ning ahead of Republican candi dates by a margin of 6 percent. Today’s results are of special significance because they provide an excellent indication of the bas ic strengths of the two major political parties in the nation some 13% months before the all important Presidential and Con gressional Elections. Here a, th j figures that show prfesent-day Democratic-Republi can strength across the U. S. A. “If you were voting for Con gressman TODAY, would you be most likely to vote for the Re publican, the Democratic, or the candidate of some other party?” The vote: NATIONWIDE Democratic 53% ftepubBcan"' " W Thibe months ago, the vote on a similar question was Democrats 52.5 percent; Republicans, 47.5 percent. In last November’s nationwide Congressional Elections, the Democrats won control of Con WHEN YOU WANT THE BEST ASK YOUR GROCER FOR... HOMOGENIZED VITAMIN D MILK Boys and Girls . . . The official vote shows that the Democrats took 52.58 percent of the major party vote; the Repub licans, 47.42 percent. (The United States Poll predicted the Vote within three-fourths of one per cent — seventy-two hundredths of one percent to be exact.) When today’s results are stack ed up alongside the national Con gressional vote in the 1946, 1948, 1950, 1952, and 1954 Elections, the trend looks like this: NATIONAL CONGRESSIONAL VOTE % % Repub. Dem. 1946 54.3 % 45.7 % **1948 46.3 % 53.7 1950 49.7 % 50.3 **1952 49.8 % 50.2 ■ 1954 47.42% 52.58 TODAY 47.0 % 53.0 **Denotes Presidential Election year Last November, the Democrats won control of the House of Re presentatives by a margin of 29 seats. The Democ: ats won 232 seats; the Republicans, 203. (218 are needed for control of the 435 member House.) Today’s results would indicate that if the elections were held to day, the Democrats would hold on to their control of Congress with approximately the same margin that they received in the 1954 Congressional Elections. It must be understood that to day’s findings reflect sentiment for the nation as a whole. They cannot be applied to any single Congressional District. It should- also be kept in mind that today’s findings reflect sen timent nearly 14 months in ad vance of the elections, and that much can happen betwteen now and November, 1956. This is one of a series of United States Poll measurements of Con gressional strength that will be reported between now and No vember 1956. Watch for them in this news paper. The Herald presents the re ports of the United States Poll exclusively in this area. > HiNTS TO 4r PUTH CU^RINT STftTf HOMI Df MQN* TRAflON flCIM FOR PLANNED HOUSE KEEPING — DAILY AND WEEKLY TASKS: Home man agement specialists say that if you follow this guide you will walk less, work less, and your house will always havle that, wall organized, well taken care of at mosphere.
