School Is Set
Foi Lutheridge
CHINA GROVE — Nearly two
hundred musicians from five
southern states will attend the
fifth annual School of Church
Music at Luthridge, Lutheran as
sembly grounds at Arden, N. C.,
from August 26 to September 1.
The largest faculty in the history
of the school will be on hand to
affer courses in all phases of
church music and conducting for
members of church choirs.
Members of the faculty include
Lelaad B. Sateren of Ausburg
College, Minneapolis, Minn.; Paul
W. Peterson of Salem 'College,
Winston-Salem, N. C.; Parkr B.
Wagnild of Gettysburg College,
Gettysburg, Pa.; L. David Miller
of Wittenberg College, Spring
field, Ohio; and Phillip K Geh
ring of Davidson College, David
son, N. C.
Director of the school is the
Rev. Harold Terry, pastor of St.
Mark's Lutheran Church, China
Grove, N. C. The chaplain is the
Rev. Michael C. D McDaniel, pas
tor of Faith Lutheran Church,
Faith, N. C. Accompanist will be
Mrs. Kathryn Wagoner Koontz
of Raleigh. Dr. J. Lewis Thorn
burg is full-time executive direc
tor of the Luthridge assembly
grounds, located midway between
Asheville and Hendersonville in
the mountains of western North
Carolina.
The daily schedule will include
courses in conducting for begin
ners and advanced pupils, funda
mentals of choral tone, choral
repertoire and interpretation,
music in church worship, child
ren’s and youth choirs, and work
shops and master classes for or
ganist on elementary and advan
ced levels. A seminar will be of
ferd on problems of organ pur
chase awd installation. Individual
classes in organ will be offered
as time permits.
The evening schedule will in
clude an opening worship service
on Sunday led by Rev. Mr. Mc
Daniels; Monday—organ concert
by Mr. Miller; Tuesday—lecture
on “The New Lutheran Service
Book and Hymnal” by Mr. Sater
en; Wednesday—organ concert by
Mr. Gerhing; Thursday—faculty
panel discussion on choir prob
lems ; and Friday—closing concert
of mass choir for guests and
friends.
A music display will be provi
ded by Brodt Music Company of
Charlotte with Mr. Eugene Craft
in charge. Cost of the school is
$25 which includes a folio of all
music to be used during the week.
Public Getting
"Box Seat"
At Conventions
People in thle Kings Mountain
area are a part of the greatest
audience in history—about 150 mil
lion Americans—at the tow 1956
political conventions in Chicago
and San Francisco.
The public is “box seat” spec
tators due to the largest press and
television hook-up in history. For
the press, telephone companies
have installed nearly 600 addition
al teletypewriters in the conven
tion cities a network of 760,000
miles of teletypewriter circuits
is rushing the news to press out
lets for distribution to newspa
pers and to radio and TV news
commentators
Over 1,500 radio stations can
receive the program from the
Convention halls via the Bell
Telephone System’s radio pro
gram network.
Fifty TV channels were availa
ble when the Democratic Na
tional Convention opened in Chi
cago, an increase of 72 per cent
over the number used for the 1952
Conventions. Record amounts of
public telephones, private lines,
switchboards, telephone circuits
and other communications equip
ment were installed. A good idea
of the size of the communications
job is the special telephone in
Convention Hall which requires
110 uniformed telephone men and
women to serve delgates and visi
tors 24 hours a day. The center
will take and relay messages to
delegates on the floor and also
handle long distance messages
through a battery of telephone
booths.
At the Republican Convention,
beginning August 20 at the Cow
Palace, 40 TV channels will be
in operation instead of the three
or four normally needed for a
public event in San Francisco.
In addition, other special com
munications facilities similiar to
those in Chicago will serve press
and broadcasting people, dele
gates and visitors
Nearly 73,000 miles of the Bell
System’s TV Channels will car
ry telecasts to 400 TV stations
in 270 cities across the nation.
More than 90 percent of all Ame
ricans will be able to sbe the Con
ventions, This compares to the
30,000 miles of channels which
carried TV programs to 107 sta
tions in only 65 citibs during the
1952 Conventions. There were an
estimated 60 million viewers
watching the ’52 proceedings. To
day, practically the entire na
tion can watch the nomination of
candidates and see the drama
that springs from our system of
selecting men for the highest
public offices in the nation.
North Carolina’s 1956 spring
pig crop was the largest of rec
ord. Totals were 4000 more than
the previous record crop produced
in 1955.
