War Orphans Can Obtain School Aid President Eisenhower signed a bill on June 29, 1956 which a wards $110 monthly up to thirty six months while the child of a serviceman or veteran of World War I, II or Korean Conflict is attending school, providing the parent’s death was the rfesultl of service. A child, for these bene fits, means a legitimate child, or child legally adopted by the pa rtent and so forth, who is less than twenty-three years old on June 29, 1956. Being married is not a bar to these benefits. These payments are bffective from Oc tober 1, 1956 for those applicants who are attending school. These benefits are for use usually while attending business, trade, vocational schools, or col. leges above secondary school le vel. Schooling above the usual four years of college degree may be obtained under this law. Also, there may be vocational rehabili tation in specialized schools or on job training offered where the child is determined to be voca tionally handicapped. Due to the procedure to be fol lowed by applicants entering schools and institutions to obtain these benefits, the eligible per son should apply immediately to the County Veterans’ Service OL ficer, Chalmus L, Miller or the office of the North Carolina Ve. terans Commission, Ervin Build, ing, Morganton. CHILDREN NEED COMFORT ABLE CLOTHING—Before mak ing children’s clothes at home or buying ready-mades, easeful pla*ning is necessary, says Julia Mclver, Extension Specialist in Clothing, N. C. State College. Ease in cut, and comfort in design and fit help children for get themselves at play. Children shouldn’t have tight fitting belts, necklines, or sleeves. A child has no waisline, and a sash or belt constantly coming un done is a nuisance to a little iboy or girl. Too large garments are as uncomfortable as too small ones. Clothing that allows for movement and growth, Miss Mc lver tells us, will have: Fullness across the should*rs and chest. Looseness through the waist line Ample length in the crotch. Enough room to allow easy bending and stooping. Loose necklines, cut low at the front. Good-sized armholes and slee ves. Weight of the garment sup ported from the shoulders. To allow for growth, look for: Loose armholes and sleeves (preferably the raglan sleeve). Large hems. Pleats. Boy’s .blouses with extra leng th to provide for moving down "3” - buttons as the boy grows. Adjustable features such as straps on suspender skirts and straps on coveralls.
