Open Gate Club
Held Meeting Wednesday
The Open Gate Garden club
heard a program by Mrs. J. E.
Herndon at the club’s regular
meeting last Wednesday after
noon at the home of Mrs. D. E.
Tate. Mrs. C. J. Gault, Jr., was
co-hostess.
Mrs. Herndon spoke on a pro
gram arranged by Mrs. Claude
Hambright, program chairman,
who introduced the speaker. Mrs.
Herndon described her trip to
Europe and spoke on European
gardens. She is a member of the
Kings Mountain Garden club.
Mrs. Sam Stallings, president
of the club, conducted the busi
ness session and recognized a new
member, Mrs. J. S. Rotan. Mrs.
Tolly Shuford, Mrs. E. R. Rob
erts, Miss Annie Roberts, and
Mrs. Paul Nolan had prepared
flower arrangements in bottles
and the arrangements were jud
ged. The blue ribbon went to
Miss Annie Roberts’ arrange
ment.
The hostesses served refresh
ments during the social hour.
Couple Honored rriday
At Rehearsal Dinner
Mrs. Carl Mayes and Mrs.
Aubrey Mauney entertained Fri
day evening at the Mayes home
on East Ridge street at a dinner
complimenting Miss Carolyn Bell
and Jay Patterson, Jr., whose
wedding was an event of Satur
day.
Guests included members of the
wedding party, and the dinner
was served prior to the couple’s
wedding rehearsal.
A color note of red and white
was observed in the decorations
throughout the Mayes home.
The buffet table, overlaid with
a white linen cloth, was cen
tered by a white styrafoam cupid
and red heart arranged with nar.

ment table where coffee was
poured. Wine glass containers
held lighted candles and red
hearts and other candelabra
held candles tied with red satin
ribbon. A bridal bouquet was the
centerpiece for the bride’s table,

white predominating.
Miss Bell wore a party dress of
drchld velvet. Her corsage, a gift
of the hostesses, featured demi
tasse spoons in her silver pat
tern arranged with ribbon in a
bouquet.

To Presbyterians
Rev. Wiiliam G. Neville, mis
sionary to Brazil, will speak at
First Presbyterian church at the
morning worship service at 11
o’clock Sunday morning, and at
Dixon Presbyterian church at
3:45 p. m. Sunday afternoon.
Mr. Neville arrived in the
United States in May 1956 on
furlough from the North Brazil
Mission of the Presbyterian
Church, U. S. In Brazil he super,
intends an evangelistic field and
engages in colportage work, be
sides teaching in the Bible insti
tute.
Bom in York, S. C., he is »
graduate of the University of
South Carolina and of Columbia
Theological Seminary. He has
served in the U. S. Air Force. He
will return to. the mission field in
the early summer of 1957.

Driver Charged
After Accident
William Milton Carpenter, of
Pine Ridge, was arrested by City
Police Monday night around 7:55
and was charged with reckless
driving.
The arrest stemmed from an
automobile accident at the inter
section of King street and Rail
road avenue, in which he and
Marvin E. Wright, of 712 Ram
seur street, were involved.
According to the accident re
port, Wright, operating a 1949
Plymouth, was traveling west on
King street. Carpenter, operating
a 1948 Chevrolet, had entered
! King street from a service sta
tion and stated to police he was
awaiting a traffic signal change
when the accident occurred.
Carpenter, who made bond of
$50. is scheduled for trial Monday
in City recorder’s court.
Both cars were estimated as
total losses.
Sunday, around 1:30 a. m., a
1950 Dodge ans a 1940 Chevrolet
were involved in an accident at
the intersection of Cleveland ave
nue and Bennett drive, police re
ported. Drivers were listed as
Donald E. Ellison, of 910 Church
street, operating the Dodge; and
Gilbert Hamrick, of Bennett
drive, operating the Chevrolet.
According to the accident report,
the accident occurred when the
Chevrolet attempted to make a
left turn. Property damages were
estimated at $150.
