Herald Sports By David Baity ©id you catch the convertible races at Oharlotte 'Fairground last Friday night? You should lhave if you wanted to see a real humdinger of a race. Joe Weatherly, driving a 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 convertible took the lead in the first lap and led for the next 178---barring a few pit stops., ft was tough luck When he lost a wheel on the sec ond turn and ground to a stop with bent tie rods and a wrecked front e;id. Staley, a North Wilkesboro dri ver astride a 1956 Chevrolet, then took the lead. All the while “(Leadfoot” Turner was climbing up from fifth, to fourth, to third to second place. Turner showed his true colors when he cinched the race on the last turn of the last lap. Coming around the fourth turn for the final stretch to the finish line, Turner, driving a 1957 IFord, gave with a sudden burst of speed and a lot of expert driving and 'beat by about a half carlength. Recreation News—Jake Early said last weekend that he still plans to have midget football because of the interest that has been shown. I believe he has e quipment for a couple of teams, maybe more. The Deal Street Pool will close albout September 2--open 'for La ibor Day. The Tennis Tournament is un derway and should 'be finished by Sunday night, September 1. Quality ol Mercy — During one of those old-time Bear-Giant donnybrooks, the Giants had 'but one good scoring chance, and the immortal King Strong hoot ed a field goal. But the Giants were offside. No goal. Steve Owen, the Giant coach, had watched the line play, and was surprised to see Joe Kopcha, the Bear Guard, on his knees. Playing opposite him was Steve’s two-ton ’brother, Bill. And Bill hadn’t made the slightest gesture toward Kopcha. 'From five yards further back, Strong again attempted a field goal. Once more he made, it. But once more the Giants were off side and once more Bill left Kop cha, still on his knees, alone. So Strong tried again and made it. Steve Owen instantly yanked Bill. "What’s the matter with you?” he roared. “You had Kop cha set up for a clean shop and Stock Gar Racing Every Saturday Night Gaffney S. C. 8 O'clock p. m. Five Local Drivers Competing Stick Elliott Don Bumgardner Odus Spencer Richard Riley Bob Etters you never laid a shoulder on him!” ‘I Just couldn’t do It, Steve,” sheepishly answered Bill. “Every - time Ken got ready to kick, Kop cha dropped to his knees and said, Tlease, Lord, don’t let him make it. I couldn’t smack a guy when he was praying, could I.” A Tip ol The Hat — Should go to all the folks who have made life pleasant in the recreation field this summer. First in line would he Jake 'Early who has done a good Job and we’re sorry, I’m sure, to hear Of his winter program Ibelng suspended. John Gamble, working (behind the scenes at the pool and around, has helped greatly although little known by many. (Miss Margaret Leech at the (Davidson pool should Ibe con - gratulated for her efforts to get things rolling--and the advisory committee headed toy (Rev. Camp bell. Then there’s Charles (Bridges, Ken Baity, James Pressly, Don Gladden who were lifesavers— they were life guards at the Deal Street pool - -and only a few of whom I could think. The concession workers, ad mittance girls, and the recre ation board all helped to make the summer pleasant. Hale to see summer go, tout then an exciting season is ahead. Be looking for you at City Sta dium when the Mountaineers meet Bessemer Citians Septem ber 6. Tickets — In case you didn’t catch the toit about the season tickets In last Thursday’s paper ---here it is again. Lawson Brawn is going to sell about 600 season passes to the home games. Price will toe $6.00 each, a dollar for each home game. You will note that the price has not (been re duced for getting the Ibefore the season start--you’re (being assur ed that you will get a seat on those crowded nights, and What more could you ask? The tickets will ibe sold at Cen tral School on a first come first served (basis--so you’d [better get yours soon. Bomb Shelter — Watching the hefty duffer ripping up th^ turf with tremendous swings, the ants became worried. lAs another mighty blow just missed them, one of the ants said: “Let’s get up on the toall be fore this guy murders us.” Ice cream is 'America’s favor ite dessert and is also served of ten with the next two flavors pie and cake.
