Bible Comment: Obeying God's Law Is Very Essence Of the Civil Order A CHRISTIAN citizen who -**■ practices his religion inevi tably influences those about him. His good works and good charac ter are constantly an invitation to others to follow his example. He becomes a leavening power in the community. In these days when there is so much stress upon mass action, we are in great danger of underesti mating the primary importance and power of the individual foi social action and betterment. There may be situations in which men in their loyalty to God and His will must renounce the social order—the state. But the good Christian will wish to ■serve and help the state which is the recognized instrument of society in every way which is in accordance with right. St. Paul lays great stress on this' in his epistle to the Romans dealing with the Christian’s civil duties. Here again, however, what Paul says is subject to the limitations of other passages in which he outlines the Christian’s duties to God—his primary obli gations. Paul’s insistence that we should do good and not evil means that it is the law of God we should obey if rulers or any one else should command us to do evil. It ought to be noted that when Paul says, “Honor the king,” he first says, "Honor all men; love the brotherhood; fear God.” There is not so much danger of the Christian falling into any unworthy subservience to rulers if he is first of all obeying these major injunctions. For, when we honor all men, love brotherhood and fear God, we are expressing the very essence of democracy and we are manifesting the basic requirements of good social order.
