Elizabeth Stewart, Editor Phone 167 Order Of Rainbow Officers Installed; Nancy McClure Heads New Organization Formal installation of officers of Kings Mountain Assembly, Or der of Rainbow for Girls, was held Tuesday night at Masonic Hall. The service of institution and initiation was held Saturday ev ening, with the Shelby Assembly officiating, assisted by Mrs. Es tella Bell, Supreme Inspector of North Carolina of the Order of the Rainbow; Mrs. Janie D. Kin caid, Mrs. Jo Kelly, Mrs. Lillian Harmon, and Miss Kittle Lou Sutton, all of Kings Mountain dhapter 123, Order of Eastern ' Star. ■ ' ’1 , | Mrs. Wanza Y. Davis, of the Eastern Star Chapter, is Mother Advisor, and (Miss Nancy Mc Clure, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. N. McClure, is Worthy Advisor. The Order of Rainbow, spon sored here by the Eastern Star, is under supervision of an advisory board including Mrs. Kelly, chair man; Mrs. Harmon, Mrs. Kin caid, Mrs. Davis, all otf the EasL tern Star, and F. R. McCurdy, C. G. White, and Thomas Ballard, all of Fairview Lodge 339. Eligible members need not be daughters of Eastern Star mem bers but may (be recommended by a Rainbow Girl. The initiation lee is $10, dues are $4, and offi cers are elected every three mon ths. The group meets each second and fourth Tuesday. Installing officers were Miss Kittle Lou Sutton, worthy ma tron of Chapter 123, OES, who installed the officers; Mrs. Janie D. Churchwomen From 16 Cities Gathered For District Meeting; 160 Attended Over 160 women representing District 1, United Church women of North Carolina, gathered here Tuesday at St Matthew’s Luth eran church for planning sess ions and a program. Mrs. James B. Simpson, presi dent, of Kings Mountain, pre sided, and officials who conduct ed the program were: Mrs. B. Frank Hall, Wilmington, state rpesddent; Mrs. T. S. Newbold, Rocky Mount, state leadership chairman; Mrs. Rufus Wilson, Burlington, state chairman of world missions; Mrs. C. S. Gold thwaite, of Raleigh, State chair man of Christian social relations, and Mrs. Roy Anderson, Raleigh, state chairman of public rela tions. Mrs. Newbold spoke particu larly about the Japanese Chris tian University and urged all Ghurchwomen groups to sponsor a Japanese tea to raise funds for a new chapel. Mrs. Hall present ed the Forward Look as an in spirational phase of the program. After four discussion groups, the members reconvened for an Information Please session. Lunch was served in the church social hall, with women from various churches serving as hostesses. Presidents and vice presidents from local churchwo imen’s groups greeted the visitors informally. A highlight of the meeting was hearing of reports of out standing projects from each of the church groups represented. District 1 includes 17 North Carolina cities. , Mrs. C. A. Butterworth, presi dent of the local organization of United Churchwomen, welcomed the group. Mrs. W. L. Pressley conducted the devotional. Mrs. Arno Haas said the benediction. Preview Of Spring, Summer Fashions Featured Junior Club Program Monday Junior Woman’s club members previewed Spring and Summer fashions at their Monday night meeting, and a large crowd of members and visitors attended. *' > ’■. i Prominent in the showing were suits featuring bloused backs, dome with belts, and full skirted dresses featuring modi fied shirtwaists. Tile sailor hat was also prominently mentioned as “'good” this year as were wash n-wear cottons and clothes ac centing color. Mrs. W. S. Fulton, Jr. and Mrs. Tom Trott, both of the sales staff of Fulton’s Department Store, presented the program with Mrs. Trott serving as commentator for the show. Mrs. Carl Mayes modeled an all-occasional suit in black and white with green scarf and black and white sailor. She also model ed a housedress and sports out fit and a black cotton sheath with checked jacket and red hat. Mrs. Jack White’s sports outfit in 'green silk had detachable standout collar, and sailor hat. The other 9ports outfit she mod eled was a three-piece suit in blue cotton which had striped blouse and detachable jacket. Mis. She also mod eled a swim suit. Mrs. Joe Hedden modeled a checked suit featuring wide col lar and short jacket, a brown silk shirtwaist dress, both worn with harmonizing accessories and a sports outfit complete with wrap-around skirt, jacket, blouse and shorts. Mrs. Fred Wright’s tailored navy suit had navy accessories, and she also modeled a cherry cotton-silk with matching brim hat and a black amd white prin cess-style dress featuring polka dot trim and complete with sail or hat. Mrs. Dan Finger and daughter, Ann, modeled a mother-daughter outfit in blue pin-striped cotton. Ann Finger also modeled a white and navy dress with beret to match. Carl and Corky Pulton and Lin da Ann and Libby Trott modeled children’s clothes, both for sportswear and dressup occas ionss. The full-skirted dresses were complete with dusters-to mattch or sweaters. Mrs. Margie McDaniel’s printed suit in off-cotton had bloused back. A beige hat completed her costume. She also modeled a lime two-piece cotton. Mrs. Johnny Kerns modeled a full-skirted pink lace and cotton dress with pink hat, a black and white cotton, and a modified Shirtwaist dress with wide belt and fullskirt. Miss Maude Owens modeled suitable clothes for the teenager, both for sportswear and other oc cnsfons. The orchid cotton she modeled had empire lines and it was worn with pique hat. ARP Cub Scouts Held Banquet Cub Scouts of Boyce Memorial ARP church held their annual blue and gold banquet last Wed nesday evening, with over fifty guests attending. The banquet is a highlight of the Cub’s activities during the year. Presentation of troop awards to the 12 CUbs was a highlight of the program which also featured showing of pictures made at Bon darken during 'the sunaner. Don Crawford showed the pictures, and Cub Master M. D. Phifer presented the awards. (Dr. W. L. Pressly, the pastor, offered the invocation. Decorations in blue and gold were featured throughout the fel Jowship hall. Placemats carried out the scout colors and blue and gold balloons were also used in the decoration. Sorority Meeting Held On Thursday The Sigma Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, international hon orary sorority for teachers, met Thursday evening at the home of the chapter president, Mrs. J. L. Raymer of Shelby. At the beginning of the meet ing Miss Mary Louise Patterson was initiated into the fchapter. Those taking part in the initiation were Mrs. Raymer, Miss Adele Justice, Mrs. W. T. Weir and Miss Louise Kiser of Kings Mountain. Mrs. Claire Leomhardt, chap lain gave the prayer. The busi ness of the chapter then followed. Mrs. Erythe Peeler, program chairman, introduced Felix Ham rick. Mr. Hamrick presented the dramatic readings, "Go Down Death” and "Enoch Arden.” Those members attending from Kings Mountain were Miss Janet Fails, Miss Helen Logan, Miss Louise Kiser, Mrs. W. T. Womanless Wedding Plans Underway; Show To Be Staged Here On March 13-14 Plans to sponsor a Womanless Wedding on two evenings—Mar- j Ch 13 and 14—are underway by, the Special Projects committee I of the Woman’s club. Featuring a. cast of 60, the! show will get underway each I night at 8 o’clock at the Wo man’s club. Admission is 50 cents for adults, 15 cents for children. Proceeds from the show will go to the club building fund. Mrs. Fred Withers is directing the production which will star Jack White as the bride, John C. In the dining room, the refresh ment table was centered with a pink and white birthday cake and a decorated candelabra set with lighted tapers. Stanley, teacher at Ashley high school in Gastonia. Mrs. Ra/chel Best, the president, conducted the business meeting. The dhib is currently using the ‘Credit Women’s Manual” for study course material. Members from Kings Moun tain and Gastonia attended. JACK WHITE, Joe L. Cole Notes Birthday Joe L. Cole, well-known Kings Mountain citizen, celebrated his 85th birthday Sunday. His fam ily honored Mr. Cole at a birth day dinner Sunday ait their home. Present for (the occasion were five of six children of Mr. Cole, Ms 13 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. Children of Mr. Cole include Mrs. Yates Jones, Mrs. Vera Gash, Paul Cole, Clyde Cole, and James Cole, all of Kings Mountain, and Dor us B. Cole of Charlotte. The decorated birthday cake provided the centerpiece for the dinner table. Class Meeting Held Saturday The Mathers Class of Faith Baptist church held its regular monthly meeting at the home of Mrs. Lucille Blanton on Satur day evening. Seven members and one visitor were present. Mrs. James Fletcher conducted the devotional; and evening prayers were offered by Mis. Other Junior State projects in cluded giving of Christmas gifts to Caswell Training School; buy ing a crib mattress for the Chil dren’s Home at Greensboro and collecting 1,000 stamps for wounded veterans. Via its Help-A-Home project, the dub provided five families with clothes, furnishings, toys, and food. Also listed*''by Mis. John H. Gamble, president, were these activities: sponsored a cooking school open to the public, with an average of 80 persons present ait each of three demonstrations; solicited $125 for the March of Dimes and also participated in the Heart Fund and Cancer drive; addressed 2,000 envelopes for Easter Seals; and contributed to the Senior Cluib’s building fund, the Ten Penny Art Fund, the Endowment Fund, and Sam racand. The club entertained new tea chers at a buffet supper, held the anniversary banquet, and held a picnic honoring the families and new members.
