Mrs. Neisler's Mother, Mrs. Biggers
.Selected State MS Mother Of Year
Mrs. Carl Biggers, prominent
Charlotte woman and mother of
Mrs. Henry Neisler of Kings
Mountain, was recently named
Norith Carolina Multiple Sclerosis
Motlhter of t!he Year.
Mrs. Biggers was the subject of
a feature article appearing in the
Tuesday Woman’s Pages of The
Charlotte Observer. Miss Joan
Metzner’s interview with Mrs.
Biggers follows:
Keeping an active mind
through her work is “the best
therapy I have,” says Mrs., Carl
Biggers, best known as “Miss
Charlotte.'’
Mrs. Biggers, recently named
N. C. Multiple Sclerosis Mother of
the Year, has been an MS victim
for 11 years.
Her “Miss Charlotte” shopping
column has run regularly in The
Observer since 1932.
“The column was out of the
paper only one Sunday in 1945
when I took the children out of
town because of the polio epi
demic,’’ she explained.
Using her canes, Mrs. Biggers
goes personally to each shop she
refers to in her column, and se
lects merchandise to be featured
that week.
She does all her own typing,
“lays out” the page, even writes
the advertisements. “Typing’s no
problem,” she said, “but I can’t
write — don’t have enough con
trol over imy fingers.”
“I didn’t know what was the
matter, but I thought something
was badly wrong with me”, Mrs.
Biggers said, as she recalled the
days in 1947 when “I walked
with a drunken stagger, had
blunt'd vision and leg cramps,
and felt extreme fatigue.”
“I thought I was extremely
lazy, and unusually awkward,
Doctors examined me over and
over again, but it wasn’t until
March 15, 1948 that I really knew
I had multiple sclerosis.”
“Aatually, I didn't know e
nouglh about it be alarmed.”
Then Mrs. Biggers’ calm eyes op
ened wider and she said softly,
“Very few of us live our whole
life span without some disability.
j MS is not the worst thing that
' earn happen.”
| MS is a disease of the central
nervous system. The insulating
sheath around the spinal cord
break down, leaving nerves ex
posed.
The sear tissue that is formed
interrupts brain impulses sent
down through the central ner
vous system, crippling eyes,
limbs,-and other vital organs. No
cure is known.
‘‘When I go up steps, I have to
stop and contemplate exactly
what I’m going to do, before each
one,” said Mrs. Biggers. “Some
time my vision gets foggy, even
i with my glasses.”
i Cooking is her hobby. At home,
i “I can do everything except pick
I up my grandchildren.” She has
' three, the children of Mrs. Henry
Noisier of Kings Mountain.
“Miss Charlotte” married Carl
! Biggers when she was in her
| junior year at Queens College.
1 Her two sons have headed for
1 the medical profession.
| “Buddy”, Dr. D. Carl Biggers,
will be chief resident in patholo
I gical research This summer at
Grady Memorial Hospital, Atlan
to. Paul, who will graduate from
Davidson next week, plans to at
tend the University of North Car
olina School of Medicine.
“I didn't tell my children about
MS until they were old enough
, to understand,” she explained.
, “They accept it as they would a
weak heart. I’ve tried to keep
it from affecting them.
“Sometimes I find myself mak
, ing great plans about all the
I things 1 want to do, and then I
find I can't do them, because of
MS. It’s the greatest frustration
I have.
1 “When I first saw a doctor,”
| said Mrs. Biggers, "he told me I
had from five to eight years to
five. Well, I’m three years over
1 his forecast now.
1 “Mine is a case of slow pro
gress, it seems. I’m not too much
worse off now than I was then.”
