Harmon asked. “A little about your work and duties as Methodist Bishop” came the repertorial answer. “That’s easy”, ithe 64-year-old churchman laughingly remarked, “the care of all ithe churches as the Apostle Paul so vividly des cribes in scripture.” And, that is exactly what th* Charlottean does. As presiding bishop of the Western North Car olina Conference of the Metho dist Church, he heads 1900 con gregations in 22 districts throughout the two Carolinas. Here rtecenty to dedicate the handsome $77,000 educational unit of Central Methodist church, Bishop Harmon recounted his ac tive life in the ministry following lunch at the Carl Mayes home. Busy overseeing the spiritual affairs of the churches he serves, the bishop also enjoys visits with his family, two sons and three grandchildren, woodwork in his shop at home and studying. Reared in a family of four boys, the bishop represents a fourth generation of preachers. I Both his father and grandfather ! were ministers. “There never was J a itime I didn”t want to be a i preacher”, the bishop said, al though I tried my hand as a draftman and surveyor as sum mertime jobs.” Being a pastor to the pastors is the most enjoyable phase of my work”, he continued. Bishop Harmon praised the Methodist system whereby min isters are moved from place to place at conference time and added the hope that all church es will work together for better relations. “Take everyday as it comes” is an Important tenet of the bish op’s philosophy, and “settle pro blems as they arrive” is still an other. “Christianity, he believes, has a past long and glorious, a pre sent in which one ought to be glad to live, an everlasting fu ture, plus the assurance of a vast hope. These man-made divisions of the time, even the God-made sun, moon, and stars, are but the scenery and stage setting for the living of our lives”, he declares. This Is The Law By Robert E.
