Scots Outlaw
Golf Games
The Scots had a simple solur t
tion when they thought they
might be caught with their de-;
fenses down — they outlawed
golf.
Back in 1497, archery was still
the chief means of defense in
Scotland. But Ithe Scots were sp
ending so much time on the
greens'tbait the country seemed
in danger of losing the bow-and
arrow race.
The World Book Encyclopedia
reports thait ithe Parliament of
King James II ordered the people
to put their clubs away and get
back to target practice.
Lalter, when gunpowder came
into general use, the law was re
voked and the Scots wenit back
to their putting.
Golf is believed to be a des
cendant of Ithe ancient Roman
game of “paganica” The World
Book Encyclopedia says the ga
me was played with a bernt stick
and a ball stuffed with feathers.
