Good Water Helps Chicks You can help your chickens beat ithe heat and keep on lay ing during this hot weather. Chickens are like humans, says W. G. Andrews, poultry sp ecialist for ithe N. C. Agricultural Extension Service, they prefer cold drinks when Ithe (tempera ture reaches 90 degrees or high er. Cold water helps birds (throw off body heat. When Ithe temperature reaches 95 degrees hens consume twice as much water as at 65 degrees. Thus, water fountain space sh ould be provided so as Ito allow most of (the birds in the flock to drink ait one time. The pipes carrying the water to ithe fountains should be protect ed from the sun since the birds will noit drink hot water. This protection is especially impor tant for those pipes carrying wa ter ito ithe range. Of equal im portance is shade for the range waterers. Comfort is ithe key to keeping hens laying (through Ithe long hot summer. High temperatures tend to reduce egg production. Increa sed consumption of cool water aids 'in maintaining high re turns during this period of stress. Keep Ithe birds comfortable, wa tered well and laying at a high rate. The controlling legislation requires the estab lishment of wheat acreage allot ments every year, unless they are suspended because of emer gency conditions. “Allotments are the basis for quota adminis tration when quotas are in ef fect, but when there are no quo tas, the allotments are still in operation. “Producers must com ply with their allotment in order to be eligible for price support— with or without quotas. If quotas are not in. operation, there is of course no ‘marketing penalty’ in volved in exceeding acreage al lotments — the only penalty is the loss of price-support: eligibi lity. “The vote on the 23rd will decide about marketing quotas for next year. This is a vitally important decision for wheat farmers. K will affect their oper ations, the degree of production controls, and Ithe level of price support which is available. But the vote on quotas will have no direct effect on acreage allot ments.” Buying Tomatoes? Use These Hints More home-grown tomatoes are arriving in the market every day.
