CARE OF HOUSEHOLD
LINENS
Homemakers in New Hanover
County learned recently how to
buy and care for linens. In buy
ing sheets, look for thread count,
breakage strength, finilh size,
weight, workmanship, and price.
Miss Verna Belle Lowery, home
economics agent, gave these five
tips for helping to prolong life
of sheets; never yank sheets
from beds because hard pulling
is damaging to a fabric; reverse
sheets; remove spots and stains
before laundering; do not fold a
slightly damp sheet because mil
dew may form which weakens
the fabric; and rotate sheets for
longer wear.
QUICK BLOCK EXHIBIT
Have you ever seen a quilt
block exhibit? Well there will be
one in Clay County at the Fall
Federation meeting in November.
According to Mrs. Mena Wood
le, home economics agent, the ex
fiibit will show favorite old pat
terns of the Home Demonstration
women. Some of the (blocks are
pieced and quilted and all are
remarkable examples of color
selection and stitchery.
NATIVE TREES AND SHRUBS
“Beauty is as close as the near
est tree, so look at it the way
you look at a painting,” says Mrs.
E. L. Griffin, Shawboro. As home
beautification leader in Currituck
County, Mrs. Griffin encourages
the use of native shrubs in land
scaping. She says when planting
trees keep in mind berries for the
birds, fruits, nuts, and leaves
that will ibe colorful in the fall.
Mrs. Elizabeth Sanderlin,
home economics agent, says the
1960 project is for each family
to plant a watermelon red crepe
myrtle tree in their yard.

to decrease another 8 per cent
during the 1959-60 feed year.
As the dollar value decreases
and food cost increases, it 'be
comes more Important to plan
and buy carefully to keep the
family well fed and stay within
Che budget. According to Miss
Catherine Millsnps, home econo
mics agent in Alamance County,
suggestions were given recently
to Home Demonstration Club
members on buying less expen
sive items with high food value
when price is important.
HOME GROUNDS
BEAUTIFICATION
Mr. and Mrs. Luther Currin are
beginning to beautify the sur
roundings of their new home in
Granville County.

"Five Minutes More And Your
Breakfast Will Score” was the
theme of a Stanly County fair
booth this year. The booth con

Watson, Home economics agent,
one table was set correctly with
a nutritious breakfast menu. The
other table featured a jar of in
stant coffee, pot of hot water,
bread in a wrapper and a jar of
jelly. How does your table look
at breakfast time?
