School Absence
Seasons Given
American children lost an av
erage of 8.4 days from school as
a result if illness or injury dur
ing the 12 months ending June 30,
1SB8, according to a new report
from the U. S. .National Health
Survey, Director Joseph R. Nor
wood of the Census Bureau’s of
fice at Charlotte said today.
The Census Bureau conducts
the field work for the household
interview part of the Health Sur
vey for the U. S. Public Health
Service. National Health Survey
information is collected from a
representative group of local
families several times a year by
Mrs. Margaret K. White of Char
lotte, N. C. This information is
combined with that collected in
500 other areas of the country to
provide national statistics.
City children lost nine days
from school, on the average, as a
result of illness or injury during
the period covered toy the survey.
Rural non-farm children lost 7.8
days during this period and farm
children lost 7.30 days. However,
farm children 15 to 16 years of
age lost about ten days from
school as compared to 6.5 days
lost toy urban children of these
ages.
Illness or injury resulted in a
total of 291.5 million school-less
days during the year covered in
flie survey. A school-loss days de
fined in the survey as being a
day when a child would have been
going to school tout instead miss
ed the whole of the school day
because of an illness or injury.

Dress Blues
Are Explained
Mr. Average Citizen is fairly
well informed about the Marine
Corps being America’s force-in
readiness, but according (to Mar
ine Sergeant C. A. McCullough,
local Marine recruiter, much my
stery surrounds the fanned “Dress
Blue” uniform.
“Although attracting attention
wherever seen, the Marine Corps
Dress uniform doesn’t conform to
conventional, modern styles be
cause lit is so steeped in tradi
tion,” said Sgt. McCullough.
The sergeant pointed out that
the red itrouser-ftripe, worn only
by officers and non-coms, com
memorates the blood of commis
sioned and non-commissioned
officers who lost their lives in
the battle of Chapuletpec in the
Mexican War of 1848.
He also said the high collar,
which looks uncomfortable, but
actually isn’t, is a holdover from
sword fighting days.
“‘When Marines were fighting
hand-to-hand on the decks of
sailing vessels,” related the Ser
geant, “the high collar was a
hard, heavy leather, padded for
comfort, and served to ward off
fatal sword thrusts at the jugu
lar vein. It was from this leather
collar hat Marines earned the
title of ‘Leatherneck’.
Sergeant McCullough conclud
ed, “we are proud of the Marine
Dress (Blues and wouldn’t chan
ge them for the world.”
