wMAm MtSOCUl SECURITY Am at February 1959, old-age, uwifnnr-. and disability insur wmm monthly benefits were be iM paid in Cleveland Counity at mm rate of $2,407,860 a year, ac «»«r>g to Lex G. Barkley, man at ithe Gastonia social sec urity district office. *TWs is an increase of about 3over last year,” Mr. Barkley Mb. Barkley stressed that while Ithe benefits are intended jptmaiily for the beneficiary’s e •eaomae security, Ithe payment •i social security benefits at the rate indicated helps business in tbe awnmuniity generally becau se most of the money is spent immediately on food, clothing, and other necessities. "In Febru ary social security benefits were being paid nationally at a rate at nearly 10 billion dollars an nually.” "Payments to a retired work «wdth no dependents receiving refits averaged $67.50 a mon nattionally in February, and to a retired couple $119.40 a mon th,” Mr. Barkley said. The aver age tor a widow with two young children was $165. The maxi mum payment for a family is $254. "There were several reasons lo«r the increase in beneficiaries over last year,” Mr. Barkley said. The long-term growth of ithe ag ed population and of Ithe propor tion of the aged population eli gible tor benefits 'are important factors in the continuing increase in the number of beneficiaries. Other reasons for ithe increase of beneficiaries are found in the provisions of the 1958 Amend ments to Ithe Social Security Act which now make it possible for the wife, dependent husband, and children of a disabled work er beneficiary to receive month ly payments. These amend ments also provide for benefits to aged dependent parents of a deceased worker even though either survivors are entitled to payments. Moreover, Mr. Barkley pcnnitea out, it is now easier for a dis abled worker to qualify for ben efit paymentts. He no longer needs social security credit for 1% yeans of work in ithe last 3 Mkjs before be became disabled. ^Phe worked under social securi ty for a least five years out of the 10 before he became disabled tie may be eligible for disability benefits. "Increases in average 'benefits payments reflect the 7 percent raise in benefit amounts which became effective with the checks tor January 1959,” Mr. Barkley said. Average disability benefit payments also reflect the elimi nation of the so-called offset pro vision in the old law. Disability benefits under social security are now payable in full even though benefits are also payable under State workmen’s compen sation or under some other Fed eral Government program. For the entire State of North Carolina, social security pay ments at the end of February 19 S9 were 'being paid to 261,421 beneficiaries at the rate of $12, 847,753. per month. Social Secur ity benefits totaling $112,429,200 were paid in North Carolina dur ing 1958. Jaycees Set Beligion Month ^tfXKY MOUNT.
