Barrett Land
Rich In Minerals
Testing to determine the con
tent of gallium, rubidium and ti
tanium of the land on the A. A.
Barrett farm two miles north
west of Waco began this weekend
as a truckload of the earth was
taken to Roanoke, Virginia, for
laboratory analysis.
Mr. Barrett is the father of
Mrs. Flay Payne of Kings Moun
tain.
Preliminary government assays
estimate the mineral content of
the rock under Barrett’s pasture
at 40 per cent for each ton of i
earth.
Officials of the Roanoke Rock
Wool Company have been inter
ested in the Barrett land for ov
er a year.
By-products of the refining
process of the ore leaves a fluf
fy, porous rock compound which
is fireproof and ideal as an insu
lating material in rock wool in
sulations.
Gallium, refined, is used in
experimental nuclear work and
is noted for its explosive charac
teristics.
Rubidium is a silver - colored
mineral which explodes when
mixed with water.
Titanium, lighter and stronger
than aluminum, is extremely
malleable and is used primarily
as an alloy with steel or other
metals. Its lightness, strength
and non - corrosive elements
make it valuable construction
of roCket frames and skins.
Mining Engineer Samuel Ho
ward said the deposit is the larg
est he has seen and chances are
the vein will cover a large area
north of Waco.
Government surveyors said the
area could yield 200 tons of ore
each day with a life span of 100
years before depletion.
Both gallium and rubidium
presently sell for around $3,600
per ton, but Engineer Howard
said the price will drop consider
ably if the deposit proves to be
$s extensive as he believes it to
