Pledge Vows In Double-Ring Ceremony
The wedding of Miss Carol
Ann Herndon of Kings Moun
tain and Glenn Maddox of Char
lotte took place Sunday in a 4 p.
m. ceremony 'held in Bethlehem
Baptist church.

ter of the Church, heard the cou
ple pledge the vows of the dou
ble - ring ceremony.
The church altar, banked with
palms and mass arrangements
of mums, larkspur, and gladioli,
was highlighted by cathedral ta
pers in seven - branched wrought
iron canddlaibras.
Mrs. James Logan was pianist
and Kenneth Smith was vocalist
for the program of traditional
music. Mr. Smith sang "Entreat
Me Not to Leave Thee" before
the ceremony and "The Wedding
Prayer” as the couple knelt for
the benediction.
The bride was given in marri
age by her father. Her formal
gown, a Maurer Original, was
made of silk organza and Alen
con lace and designed along
princess lines. The lace bodice
had short sleeves and the bou
fant skirt of silk organza and
taffeta ended in a chapel train.
Her fingertip veil of illusion was
draped from a tiara of Reed
pearls and she carried white ro
ses and stephanotis arranged on
a white lace - covered Bible.
Miss Kathy Herndon attended
her sister as maid of honor and
Miss Louise Maddox of Charlotte
sister of the bridegroom, as
bridesmaid.
Bridal attendants wore waltz
length dresses of pink embroid
ered organdy and taffeta, with
scoop necklines, brief sleeves, and
very full skirts. They wore mat
ching bandeaux and carried
nosegays of pink carnations and
white baby’s breath, with pink
ribbon streamers.
Participating in the wedding
as honorary attendants were
Miss Ann Stroupe, Mrs. Henry
Miller, Mrs. Glenn Snyder, and
Miss Rachel Hamrick, all of
Charlotte, and Mrs. Paul Fite
and Miss Sara Mae Hamrick,
both of Kings Mountain.
Charles Herndon, the bride’s
brother, served as the bride
groom’s best man and Bobby
Herndon, brother of the bride,
lighted altar candles prior to the
ceremony.
Ushers were Archie Maddox of
Bennettsville, S. C., Barry Strou
pe and Henry Miller, both of
Charlotte, and Edward Blanton
of Concord.
The bride’s mother wore a
street-length dress of pink em
broidered organza with accessor
ies in white and shoulder cor
sage of rosebuds.
Mrs. Maddox, the bridegroom’s
mother, wore navy blue with
white accessories and a shouldei
corsage of white rosebuds.
After the ceremony the wed
ding party formed a receiving
line in the church vestibule to
greet wedding guests.
The new (Mrs. Maddox is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wil
liam A. Herndon of Kings Moun
tain. Since her graduation from
Grover high school and King’s
Business College she has been
employed as a secretary in the
law offices of Brock and Bartley
in Charlotte.
Mr. Maddox is the son of Mrs,
Jasper Maddox of Gibson and the
late Mr. Maddox. He was grad
uated from Gibson high school
and is a dispatcher for Bell Lin
es, Inc., of Charlotte.

drop-in party at her home on

Bridal colors of white and
green were featured in decora
tions throughout the home. In i
the dining room, the bride’s ta
ble, overlaid with linen outwork,
held a crystal punch bowl at one
end and a mass arrangement of
glads and pompons at the other.
Silver trays held fancy cookies
and other party goodies.
Mrs. Davidson headed the re-'
ceiving line which included Miss
Weir, her mother, Mrs. S. S. Weir,
Jr„ Mrs. Fred Palls, Sr., mother,
of Miss Weir’s fiance, and Miss
Marlene Weir, sister of the bride
elect.
Assisting in receiving and en
tertaining were Mrs. Marriott
Phifer and Mrs. O. O. Jackson.
Miss Weiir wore an embroider
ed cotton sheath of cocoa brawn
with shoulder corsage of yellow
carnations, her gift from the hos

Frederick Hambright Chapter,
DAR, on Wednesday afternoon,
June 1. at the home of Mrs. Eddie
Campbell at the Battleground.
Eleven members were present.
The meeting opened with the
DAR ritual. Mrs. T. M. Shu ford,
regent, presided over the business
session. Resolutions passed at
the National Congress were re
viewed. It was announced that
Mrs. Shuford and Mrs. W. L.
Pressly attended the district plan
ning meeting in Charlotte on
May 10. It was also reported that
the chapter gave nine Citizenship
medals in the fifth grades of the
local schools, and eight History
medals in the seventh grades.

ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCED — Mr. and Mrs. James Daniel
Plant of Tallahassee, Florida, announce the engagement of their
daughter, Rubie Elizabeth, to Charles Arthur Butterhvorth, Jr.,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Arthur Butterworth, Sr., of Kings
Mountain. Miss Plant is a graduate of Florida State University
and holds a Master of Arts degree from Northwestern University.
She is presently serving as Dean of Women at Brevard College,
Brevard. Mr. Butterworth attended Washington and Lee Univer
sity and holds the position of Business Manager of Brevard Col
lege. The wedding will take place on July 9th in Brevard Metho
dist church.
Kings Mountain Girls Among Sub-Debs
Presented At Charity Ball On Saturday
The Junior Charity League’s
15th annual Sub-Debutahte ball
| held Saturday night, June 4, at
the Shelby Community Center
climaxed with brilliance and
splendor the days of festivity for
the Sub-Debs who were present
ed to society at the affair.
The Community Center ball
room was transformed into an
unusually elegant setting for the
occasion. The decorative high
light of the stage was a white
' and silver winding stairway sil
j houetted against a sapphire blue
, background. On either side at the
[ foot of the stairs White and sil
ver newel posts held two im
mense silvered candelabras with
' crystal prisms enhancing the
| eight lighted branches of each.
A further decorative note on the
stage was a curved White orna
mental railing forming a niche
i for the orchestra. Gracefully
hung swags of white tulle, fleck
ed with silver, on either side of
the stairway completed the baek
I ground.

Circle Welcomes
New Members
Three new members were wel
comed into Circle 2 of the Wo
men’s Missionary Union of Sec
ond Baptist church Monday
night. They are Mrs. Clinton
Woods, Mrs. Janet Cunningham,
and Mrs. Daner McDaniel.
Mrs. Albert Hastings, hostess
\ at the church pastorium, had also
| arranged the program) on the
theme, “Education - Youth - Mis
sions." Mrs. McAbee offered the
. opening prayer and a short bus
iness session was conducted fol
lowing the program.

crystal chandeliers, which caught
and reflected the sparkle of ma
ny lights. Surrounding the chan
deliers the ballroom ceiling was
covered with white nylon gath
ered into graceful poufs, giving
a cloud-like effect.
One hundred and five lovely
young girls from: Shel'by and
surrounding Western North Car
olina cities made up the list of
those presented. They wore for
mal white ball gowns, long white
gloves, and each carried an arm
bouquet of red roses, tied with
red ribbons and long streamers
Each debutante entered the
stage from a landing on the white
and silver stairway, came to the
front of the stage and stood smi
ling for a moment as she was in
troduced. Then she descended a
brief Stairway to be joined at the
foot of it on the main floor by
her two escorts. .Each girl and
her two escorts were spotlighted
as they walked the length of the
ballroom floor.
At the conclusion of the form
al presentation the sub-debutantes
formed an elaborate figure at the
end of Which they were joined by
their chief escorts for the first
dance.

girls who were presented at the

Miss Mary Alice McDaniel was
at the organ and Miss Daisy
Hawkins of Gastonia was soloist
for the program of nuptial music.
Miss Hawkins sang “O Promise
Me” and “O Perfect 'Love” before
the ceremony and "Seal Us O
Holy Spirit” for the benediction.

Methodist church.
The group enjoyed a delicious
meal in the backyard of Mrs. A.
P. Anthony’s Home. Each family
who attended 'had prepared a pic
nic basket and dinner was spread
on picnic tables at the noon hour.

event of August 27th in First Methodist church of Gastonia.

Sharing honors with Miss Weir
were three of the season’s brides
elect who were remembered with
gifts from the hostesses. They
were Miss Jackie Arnette, Miss
Billie Miabry, and Miss Sara Hou
ser.
The pink and white motif was
combined with beautiful effect
throughout the party room. Ov
erlaid with a cutwork cloth, the
refreshment table held an ar
rangement of pink and white
flowers at the center, with pink
tapers used at one end in crys
tal candelabra and the silver
punch bowl at the opposite end.
A tiered mint and nut compote
on the serving table was decora
ted with wedding bells. Magnolia
blossoms were used on the man
tel together with a large heart
and cupid with poufs of green
net.
At refreshment time the host
esses served pink iced cakes with
lime punch, mints, and salted
nuts.
Miss Weir wore a brown shea
th dress with bertha collar and
shoulder corsage of pink and
white pompons, gift from the
hostesses. The bride-elect’s honor
gift was silver in her bridal
pattern.

Morgan serving as chairman for
the event.

punch service graced one end of
the table. The decoration opposite
the punch service was a large
two-tiered silver and crystal
epergnc. Colorful fruits and
flowers decorated the base of
the epergne and trailed down the
center of the table. The large
crystal bowl of the upper ti«>r
was gracefully filled with majes
tic daisies, shasta pompoms,
snapdragons and gypsophila in,
soft tones of yellow and white.
