Fire Deaths
During Holiday
Remain High
How many persons will die in
fites during the Christmas holi
day?
“Not a one, necessarily,” the
National Safety Council declared
today. “The grim picture of fre
quent fires at Christmas does not
need to be — not if people take a
few precautions.”
The Council cited these facts a
bout fires: /
1. More than 1,000 persons died
laist year in December — month
When most fire deaths occurred.
2. Chief victims are the very
young — children under 5 — and
persons 75 years of age or more.
3. Inrecent years, more than
half a million homes have been
struck by fire.

To keep yourself and your loved
ones from 'becoming fire victims,
the National Safety Council ma
kes these life-saving suggestions:
—Don’t let gift wrappings ac
cumulate so they become a fire
hazard.
'—Don’t smoke in bed. And at
'holiday get-togethers, use deep
ash trays that will hold burning
cigarettes securely.
—Check your Christmas tree
wiring for possible shorts. Better
to buy a new string of lights than
to risk having tragedy visit your
home.
—Don't leave the Christmas
tree lights burning if you’re 8-;
way from homo or out of Che
room for long.
—Don’t put your tree up too
early. And don’t leave it up so
long it gets dried out. Keep it
moist..
—Metallic Christmas trees are
fine — if you use the floor flood
lights rmose manufacturer’s rec
ommend. Don’t risk a death-deal
ing short by putting a tring of
lights on a metallic tree.
