Place Phone Back On Kook Advises Fanis Replacing the telephone re ceiver on the hook when you’re through talking may seem like a ‘‘little" thing to do. But it can be a ‘'big” thing it you don’t. E. F. Farris, Manager for Sou thern Bell Telephone Company, pointed out today that many per sons “unknowingly” are putting their own and perhaps other tel ephones out of service every day by not replacing the receiver when through talking. For all practical purposes. Mr. Farris said, a telephone receiver off the hook is the same as a tel ephone out of order. And on a party line, that means every tel ephone on the line is out of ser vice. 1 In an “emergency,” this could cause hardship. A common cause of disruption of telephone service is failure to replace the telephone on the hook when someone is told to answer the phone on another extension, Mr. Farris said. When a person continues to get a “busy signal” because the par ty he is trying to reach has his phone off the receiver, the caller usually notifies the telephone company that the phone is "out of order.” The phone company may then send a repairman out on a "service” call only to disco ver the phone is off the hook. Such service calls have been increasing in Kings Mountain, Mr. Farris said. That’s why he appealed today to telephone us ers to make a special effort to replace receivers after completing calls.
