You’re crazy!” Maybe. But, take a look at the findings of a seed box survey made by the N. C. Department of Agriculture in the fall of 1960: Seventy five per cent of Tar Heel grain producers planted non-certified seed in 1960. It was seed, which, for the most part, hadn’t been tested for purity and germination. And it was mostly untreated seed. “A great many producers plan ted their grain fields in weeds,” says Foil MjdLaugMin, assistant director of the N. C. Crop Impro vement Association at State Col lege. The survey showed there Was 56 times as much weed seed in non-certified seed as a "blue tagged” (certified) seed: 27 tim es as much seed of crops other than What the producer thought he was planting; 129 seeds of noxious weed per pound in non certified seed. |A third of oat producers plant ed without knowming the variety. ■"Most of the bad 'grain seed planted in the state comes from neighbors of the producers,” says McLaughlin. “The farmer’s nei ghbor is his worst source of seed, usually.’’ For 75 cents more an acre, the small grain producer can insure that he’ll get a good crop of grain. That’s all it costs to buy certified and treated seed. "A yield of just one bushel more per acre will pay the differ ence,” McLaughlin points out. Chances are the yield will be far better than that. Small grain planting, the ma jor post-harvest activity of Tar Heel farmers, is a couple of weeks late this fall. Producers have put off planting, hoping for rain that would make the fields plowable. “The lateness of planting is even more reason for sowing cer tified seed,” says McLaughlin. “Good seed will cut the risk of plant damage from cold weath er.” Certified seed, he says, will come up now and grow off well. It will mean plants with good root systems, resistant to the ev ver-present soil organisms in the cold months. One reason of growing impor tance for planting certified seed: More and more farmers are finding that early-bearing small grain is an excellentt crop to plant in rotation with tobacco. “The tobacco producer wants to take no chance on weeds from non-certified seed in his tobacco fields," says MkLaughlin. Another strong reason, espec ially for wheat: "Many of the mills in the state refuse to buy wheat that’s weed choked or the wrong variety,” McLaughlin says. Look for that blue tag when you buy seed.
