Mrs. William Barry Smith mmm . i Miss Mary Susan Looper, Barry Smith Wed Saturday In Double-Ring Ceremony Miss Mary Susan Looper of Bessemer City and Wili am Bar ry Smith of Kings Mountain were wed in a 4:30 p.m. ceremony in Bessemer City’s Odell Memorial Methodist chiureh. The Rev. James A. Allen, pas tor of the church, officiated at the dpuble-ring service. Areca palms formed a back ground for the exchange of pled ges. Cathedral tapers burned in Wrought-iron candelabra and al ter vases held white gladiolus and chrysanthemums. Mrs. Donald Deal was organ's! for the program of traditional music and B. S. Peeler, Jr. of Kings Mountain was vocal solo ist. The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a formal Wedding gown of silk organza ever taffeta, designed with mold ed bodice and featuring a sculp tured neckline and bracelet -- length sleeves. Re-embroidered medall'ons of Alencon lace ac cented the neck and sleeves, and garlands of re-embroidered lace were lavishly appliqued on the controlled organza skirt which swept from an obi sash at the back waistline into a full, Chapel train. Her triple-tiered veil of pure silk illusion was caught to a crown of Alencon lace and seed pearls and she carried a white lgee-covered B'ble topped with a white orchid and showered with valley lilies. IMPS. O. W. Farrow, Jr. of Morrisville, Pa. was her sister’s matron of honor and bridesmaids were the bride’s sister, Miss Sher rie Looper; Miss Polly Hamrick, Mias Brenda Coon, all of Besse mer City, qnd Miss Loretta Falls of Gastonia. Bridal attendants wore cock tail-length dresses of Arosa pink Satepeau, featuing scoop neck lipes and brief sleeves. The bell skirts swept to back fullness with handmade roses centering the back closing of the molded bo dices. They wore matching ban deaux and slippers and carried nosegays of pink and white Gar za chrysanthemums and tulle w th matching streamers. The bridegroom’s father was best man. Ushers were O. W. Farrow, Jr. of Morrisville, Pa., brother-in law of the bride; Van Sherrill of Claymont, Delaware; Thomas Watts and Thomas Gunter, both of Raleigh. Miss Jill Smith, sister of the bridegroom, presided at the re gister in the vestibule of the church, The bridal party formed a receiv ng line to greet wedding guests immediately following the ceremony. BR/flJS AND BRIDEGROOM The new Mrs. Smith is a daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. James V. Looper of Bessemer City. She is a graduate of Bessemer City high school and attended Evans College of Cemmerce in Gasto nia. Prior to her marriage she was employed in the offices of Threads, Ine. of Gastonia. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas W. Smith of K'ngs Mountain are parents of the bridegroom. He is a grad uate of Kings Mountain high school and received his B.S. de gree in mechanical engineering ip June from North Carolina State College. At State, he pledg ed Theta Tau fraternity and was knighted into the Order of St. Patrick. He has joined the adver t sing firm of Babcock & Wilcox Company in New York City. North Bergen, New Jersey will be home for the newlyweds fol lowing their mountain wedding trip. They will reside at 8829 Hudson Boulevard. Club It Continuing Calendar Project The Junior Woman’s elub, at its regular monthly meeting Monday night, conducted a house-to-house canvass of the community in an effort to com plete work on its annual com munity calendar fund-raising project. The drive is continuing this month. The attractive calendars list birOiday and/or wedding anniversaries of individuals, club meeting dates and adver tising of business firms. Pro ceeds are used by the club in its extensive program of com munity service. Following the canvass, mem bers gathered at the clubhouse for refreshments and a short business meeting. Herbert Whit ley entertained Friday evenfcjg at a cake cutting following the re hearsal for the wedding of Mjss Mary Susan Looper and Barry Smith. The Whitleys were hosts to members of the wedding party and two families at their home, 111 West Texas Avenue, in Bes semer City. Mm. Lawrence Dixon cut the cake and Mrs. Harry Lee Davis, assisted toy Miss Jamie Looper, poured punch. The bride’s table, overlaid with heirloom lace cloth, held the three-tier green and white wed ding cake as decorative highlight. A silver candelabrum pt the cen ter held lighted tapers, punch was served from a silver service at one,end. Ivy, which trailed the length of the cloth, connected the two end pieces with the cen ter arrangement. Bridal colors in green and white were carried out decora tively throughout the house. Miss Looper wore a yellow or ganza party dress and received a shoulder bouquet of green gla mellias from the hosts. The bride-to-be and the pros pective bridegroom took the oc casion to present their gifts to their wedding attendants. Party Honors Bride-Elect Miss Tamara Cornwell, bride elect of Saturday, was honored Tuesday night at a miscellaneous shower at Firestone Woman’s clubhouse in Gastonia. Hostesses were Mrs. Buford Blanton, Mrs. C. P. Hawkins, Mrs. Connie Brock, Mrs. W. P. Caus by, Miss Alix Causby, Mrs. Lee Blalock, Miss Becky Blalock and Misses Marguerite Styers and Evelyn Mayfield, all of Gastonia. Bridal games were played and party refreshments were served. Her formal gown was designed of white silk organza and Chant lly lace and featured a long-sleeved basque bodice with scalloped Sabrina neckline. Scattered lace medalli ons highlighted the very full skirt which had a Chapel train. Her veil of illusion was draped from a double lace crown of pearls and sequins and she car ried a bouquet of white roses and English ivy. Mss Suzanne Stokes was her sister’s maid of honor and brides maids were her roommate, IMiss Anne Bullock of Charbourn and Virginia Beach; her cousins, Mrs. Jamcg Lawson Chandler, Jr. of Crecnsboro and Ruffin, Miss Anne Chandler and Mrs. Alvin Willette. Shannon Saunders of Charlotte daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. D. Saunders, former residents, was flower girl. Shannon is cousin of the bride. Rr dal attendants wore formal length gowns of blue peau de sole with matching headdresses worn with flirtation veils. They carried cascades of yellow roses. The flower girl’s dress was of white ruffled net and organza. She carried a white basket of yellow roses. Thomas Lane Stokes, Jr. of Norfolk, cousin of the bride, car ried the rings. The bridegroom had his bro ther, Donald Alvin Bridges, Jr. of Dania as best man. Ushers were Jack Stevens of Bergen, Ky., the bride’s brother, Richard Houser Stokes, and her cousins, James Lawson Chandler and Allen Stokes Swann. BRIDE AND BRIDEGROOM Mr. and i\lrs. William Pinkney Stokes of lluffin are parents of the bride who received her bach elor of arts degree in education from Greensboro college. She was a member of the college newspaper staff ang a sjgncr 0f the Gold Book. For the past four years she has 'been on the faculty of Court House school in Virginia Beach, Va. The bridegroom is the. son of Mrs. Donald Alvin Bridges of Dania, Fla. and the late Mr. Bridges. He earned his bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of Florida, at Gaines ville. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and served as a lieutenant (j. g.) in the Navy. He is an architect ap prentice in Arlington, Massachu setts. The couple’s wedding trip will lake them to Virginia Beach, the Middle Atlantic States and the New England States. They will be at home at 112 Decatur Street, Apartment 2, in Arlington, Mass. Among out-of-town wedding guests were Mrs. !M. L. Hauser, the bride’s grandmother, Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Poston, aunt and uncle of the bride, all of Kings Moun tain; and Mr. and Mrs? D. D. Saunders and family, of Char lotte. The Saunders’ are aunt and uncle of the bride. Engaged Pair Fe+ed Saturday Miss Pat Owens and Charles Preston, whose wedding will be an event of Sunday, were guest of-honor Saturday at a cook-out given by Mr. and Mrs. Kelly Mc Carter at their home on Shelby road. The hosts took the occasion to present their wedding gifts to the couple — an outdoor barbe cue grill. Miss Owens and Mr. Preston wore matching green and white sports outfits. The two hostesses entertained together honoring Miss Jo Ann Yates, whose wedding to Larry iMorrow will be an event of Sun day. Guests woreinvited to pall at the McElroy home on Harvie Avenue in Gastonia. The refreshment table was spread with green satin over Whits lace. Pink flowers and White tapers in crystal holders were used in table arrangements. Miss Betty McAbee poured punch, whx-h was served with as sorted party delacacies. Miss Yates received a shoulder bouquet of white carnations and a gift of crystal. ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCED - Mr. and Mrs. M. V. Bolton announce the engagement of tlieir daughter, Ida Gail, to Jerry Dean Hope, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Hope. Both families are of Kings Mountain. The wedding will take place August 18th at 3 p.m. in Midview Baptist church. . People In 7 he News Allen Tate, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Tate, celebrated his third birthday Thursday, August 1st, at a lawn party at the home of his grandpa rents, Mr. and Mrs. W. Law rence Logan. The party for 34 children was also attended by Allen's paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Grady Tate, his great-aunt, Mrs. Percy Dill ing, and his aunt, Mrs. Bob Herndon of Conover, all of whom assisted the Logans and Tates in entertaining. Refreshments were served from a gaily-decorated red and wnire Table on the back porch. A circus?cake made by Mrs. Herndon was cut and served with pipk lemonade ana circus horns and other favors were given each child. Peanuts were served from red and white barrel baskets and the cir cus theme was carried out as decorative motif. * * * * Bridal Party Miss Susan Davis, whose wedding to Bill Rhyne takes elace Saturday, was guest-of-honor Friday morning at a co a party given by her aunts, Mrs. Evan Glenn and Mrs. Wil iam Neil Davis, at the Davis home in Gastonja. Forty guests called from 10:30 until I I ;3Q. Miss Davis received a gift of linen and a corsage of sweetheart roses from the hostesses. Refreshments were served on the sun porch which was decorated with hanging baskets filled with zinnias. Overlaid with green linen, the refreshment table held a wooden buck et overflowing with zinnias and wicker and wooden trays of miniature pop-overs filled with chicken salad, olive swirls, cheese straws, and assorted cookies. A wooden tub was filled with iced colas. Comings And Goings Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Lovelace and Mrs. H. A. Goforth’ spent several days last week in Atlanta, Ga. where they visit ed the Lee Barber family. * * * * Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Tate and son, Alien and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Herndon and daughter, Kim are vacationing this week at Myrtle Beach, S. C. Mary Ann (Mrs. Johnny) Kerns and two sons, Butch and Clyde, are here from Ruston, La. for a visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Crouse, and Mr. Kern's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Kerns. They expect to be here about two weeks. * * * * Mr. and Mrs. Carl King, Jr. and daughters, Helene and Laura Lea, spent last week from Charleston, S. C. with Mr. and Mrs. W. Lawrence Logan. Helene remained here for a longer visit. * * * * Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Goforth have arrived from San Diego, Calif, following Mr. Goforth's discharge after four year's duty with the Navy. The Goforths are visiting his pa rents, Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Goforth. ♦ * ♦ ♦ Mr. and Mrs. Bob Herndon and daughter, Lisa, of Con over, and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Bell and sons, David, Jeff and Keith, of Columbia, S. C. were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. Lawrence Logan. Mrs. Bell and Mrs. Herndon are daughters of the Logans. * * * * A/2C William (Benny) Logan has reported to Davis Monthan AFB at Tucson, Arrizona, following a month's leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Logan. Airman Logan had been stationed for some time at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Miss. Mr. and Mrs. Logan and Bobby accompanied Benny back to Tycson by car but made the return trip vfo jet plane to Charlotte.
