Santa Gets Garb
From Poem, Cartoon
Santa first appeared in his
now-traditional guise as a plump,
jovial, white-bearded and pipe
smoking old gentleman “a
right jolly old elf" — in the
|)oem, “A Visit from St. Nicho
las,” written by Dr. Clement C.
Moore in 1822.
Earlier, "Santeclaus” had been
pictured dressed as a bishop in a
bo°k called "The Children's
! Friend," and in Washington Irv
i Ing's “Knickerbocker History of
New York,” published in 1800,
Santa was said to wear a broad
brimmed hat and huge breeches.
Even Dr. Moore's poem did not,
apparently, clothe Santa in a
red suit. “He was dressed all in
fur from his head to his foot;”
says the poem.
Santa as he looks today was
first sketched by Cartoonist Tho
mas Nast, in 18G9. The cartoon
showed Santa in his familiar rod
garb, smoking a pipe.

Know What To Do
In Cases Oi Fire
Baby sitters who know what to
do in ease of fire or other emer
gency can make your Christmas
a merrier one.
The possibility of a Christmas
, tree fire always adds to the re
sponsibilities of a baby sitter and
should be ot special concern at
this time of year.
When she comes into your
home, at any time of year, you
can give her a hand by providing
her with phone numbers she
might have to use quickly. Place
a card beside the phone with the
phone numbers of (1) the fire de
partment, (2) the police depart
ment, (3) the lamily doctor, (4)
the number of the phono where
the parents may be reached, and
(5) the phone number of a near
by neighbor.
The National Board of Fire
Underwriters gives these other
suggestions:
1. Employ a sitter you know
Be sure she knows her job, is re
sponsible, and likes children.
2. Employ a sitter your child
ren will enjoy being with, and
let her get acquainted with them
before you leave. If you have
pets, let her get acquainted with
them, too.
3. Make sure the sitter clearly
understands that in case of fire,
she should get the children out of
the house quickly.
4. Show the sitter two alternate
routes of escape from the house
so that if one is blocked by fire,
she and the children can use the
other one.
5. Supply the sitter with nasn
lights to >use in case of power
failure.
6. When you leave, tell the sit
ter when you are planning to re
turn home. Telephone her if you
are delayed.
7. Always make arrangement
for seeing the sitter home.
Christmas customs in Puert<
Rico are similar to those ii
Spain. According to the Book o
Knowledge, Three Kings Day, oi
January 6th, is the traditiona
time for gift-giving and folk cel
ebrations in most rural areas
Only in theeities have the cele
brations been shifted to Christ
mas Day.

WRIGHTS
Barber Shop
THE STORY OF THE BIRTH OF CHRIST has, for centuries,
been an inspiration to artists. The Nativity, the adoration
of the shepherds, the journey of the Wise Men and the
Madonna and Child have been the subjects of hundreds
of beautiful paintings. "The Madonna and Child,'’ shown
here, is by Vincenzo Foppa, a Milanese painter of the
fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. It is painted in
tempera on wood. From the Metropolitan Museum of
Art The Theodore M. Davis Collection. Bequest of Theo
dore M. Davis, 1915.

RUGS AND CARPETS
Twenty - five Rockingham
homemakers recently attended a
special school on selecting rugs
and carpets which play a vital
role in furnishing a home. Fol

mill showroom to study rugs.

to the decorating scheme of the
home by considering color and
design.
FURNITURE ARRANGEMENT
When the New Market home

they were given a drawing of a
floor plan and templates and ask

Mrs. Dorothy Herndon, assist

ports they discussed the points to
consider for good arrangements.
She emphasized these points by

DRAPERY MAKING
Tired of looking at those old
faded draperies? If so, you may
want to learn to make your own.
Miss Harriet Tutterow, assistant
home economics agent, says 25
Lincoln County homemakers have
been learning to make draperies.
Miss Charlotte Womble, house
furnishing specialist, taught the
women how to select fabrics,
measure windows, and the step
by-step procedure for construct
ing draperies. Mrs. Everett Price
said it was the best workshop she
had ever attended.
SPECIAL DINNER HELD
Two foreign students at West
ern Carolina College talked a
bout how Christmas is observed
fin their country at the annual
Christmas traditions dinner held
in Jackson County.
Miss Patsy Craine, assistant
home economics agent, says Mrs
Anna Engerstrom, Denmark, and
Hans Tholander, Sweden were
guests of the Home Demotnetra
tion Club women.
One of the earliest Christmas
carols still sung, today is "The
First Noel,” based on a medieval
shepherd song. According to the
Book.,of Knowledge, scholars are
uncertain of its country of origin
and both France and England
claim it.

Many of these tragedies can la
