A lU Wai On Polio Sunday, March 22 What will you and your family he doing on the Sunday afternoon of March 22? Of course the question is am blguous hut, if odds mean any thing. chances are 5 to 1 that you Mill go through all four of the following actions: 1 • You and the family will gc to Kings Mountain Armory, Beth ware School o. Davidson school when* several thousand friends an dneighbors also will he st >p >.ng at one time on another dur ing the afternoon; 2> You will go through the al most ridiculously "un • painful' preexs of eatim an onlinarj' cube of sugar which has been moisten ed with two carefully measured drops of tasteless liquid; 3* You probably will choose tn place a .TO-cent donation in a bucket to help meet expenses of the program you've just partici pated in; and •I* A few minutes later you will go hack to your usual Sunday af ternoon routine but with a new senae of security and well-being - knowing you have eur.pleted the most important step necessary to protect your family and others from future ecriemics of polio. Importantly, your actions will be repeated ty approximately 400,000 other people during that same Sunday* afternoon, and all within a 7-courty area of North Carolina's piedmont. Catawba. Cleveland, Ire dell. Lincoln. Mecklenburg and Union. Combined population is a bout 600.000.) From a population standpoint, the mass immunization program will be the largest community ef fort in the history of the entire section— including elections, char ity drives, war efforts, or any other type of organized program. So vast and complete will be the all-out issrult that between 175 and 200 separate fully-staff ed clinic locations are being es tablished throughout the 7 coun ties for that one afternoon. This will mean an average* of about one clinic for every 3,000 population. Also it is significant that the typical clinic that afternoon will be capable of administering a bout 1.500 doses (>er hour on a priduetion line basis. Translated by a full-time ad ministrative cor rdinator who has been enlisted by the combined Medical Societies for the 7-county assault, that 1.500 • people - per • hour figure means; "Kach of the (linics thus will he able to take ca»*e of about 125 pbople per minute which in turn means that a seemingly ‘long line' of 50 people shouldn't fright en anyone more than about two minutes worth”. The coordinator also revealed that a staggering total of 7,500 volunteer workers ranging from KO Polio The winners!
