Philosophies On Space Age Living A progress report for Spare age parents and educators: About half of today's youth are still getting their sex educa tion from their friends. It was this way in 15VW and its practi cally unchanged today. Tito father and mother an- the family's board of directors and their task is to direct the enter prise so it will grow so when they retire their children will be ahje to take over din-etion of their own businesses. We can think of mental health as a family business. Rearing of the youngster is left almost to the mother. Men have a natural hesitancy about being Involved in what is termed fain ily life education. Five Charlolteans. including two medical doctors, both women, a minister, a housewife and a public health educator give these philosophies on family life education. They will he join ed by a Charlotte newspaper re porter in a panel program hen next Thursday night, closing ses sion of the week of Family Life activities at Kings Mountain high school. James Banbury, news editor of the Charlotte News, will serve as moderator and panelists will discuss the topic. "Are We Pas sing The Buck In Family Life Education." Participating will lx- Mrs. Ban bury. president of the Charlotte Family Life Council and a sub stitute teacher in the Charlotte Junior high school; Di Elizabeth Corkey. assistant director of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Health Do partment; Mrs. John P. Ross, medical doctor and coordinator for the Parent-Family Life com mittee of the P-TA Council; Rev. William B. Bobbitt, associate minister of Charlotte's Myers Park Presbyterian chun-h; and Dr. Laura Ross.Venning. |M-dia trie consultant with the Chariot tf health department. The Family Life Council tChar lotto and Kings Mountain are two of seven local ones organized in the United Stalest js made up of people who are professionally interested in improving human values. A psychiatrist, a gyneco logist, a minister, a public health educator, these anil interested persons such a> a banker, house wife and teacher, they are but a few examples. They plus others from the member agentles (more than 7<> in the Charlotte chapter) are mis sionaries involved in a county wide offer of help. The Councils themselves cannot extend help per sc- but are organizations to inform. They do no stand in competitioin with other agencies or organiza'ions nor cm they of fer interagency help unless a problem bei-omcs too complex for any one organization. The Charlotte Council main tains a Speaker’s Bureau and sends out a News Sheet monthly to a 800-member mailing list. The Council board of 28 meets month ly All panelists agree tlial as a group a Family Life Council's greatest strength lies in its abili ty to inform. Above all. it seek to overcome the age-old stigma attached to problem of mind and soul. It focues the resources of community on the needs of its people and helps develop within our people the awareness that t > ask for hhlp is a sign of strength. "Children need to experience hate, love, anyiety and the like in a family atmosphere which is ac cepting of thesr emotions as a normal part o; living". Dr. K->ss said. "Doctors can tell a child about reproduction hut the attitudes, values and the approach of the subject to a child is the most dif ficult". Dr. Corkey said. “Family Life is such a personal and broad subject we tend to skirt around it", Rev. Mr. Bobbitt said. The Charlotte Coun- il was or ganized 15 years ago as a com bined effort of the P-TA and oth er community leaders. The Kings Mountain Council was organized last year.
