Western Carolines League Opens lSt-Game Schedule Friday Night The 1964 Western Carolinas League baseball schedule get underway Friday night with a lull schedule of games. Tht* league is beginning its fifth year of operation, and la-a gue President. John Moss is ex pecting the best year ever as all eight clubs will have major league affiliations. Neighboring Gastonia and Shelby will open the season at hotnfr and on the road respect ivety. Gastonia plays host to Rock Hill in the opener Friday night at 7:30. and Shelby travels to Statesville. :Shelby opens its home season Saturday night with a return game with Statesville, and ‘the Yankees and Pirates play at Sims Memorial Stadium Sunday afternoon. Reporting for the annual West ern Carolinas S|iortswrighters and Sportscasters meeting, which was held at the Holiday Inn in Gastonia Sunday. Jimmy Wright stored the only individual first place finish for the Mountaineers as he won the 1120-yard high hurdle event with a time of 16.3 The Mountaineer 880-relay tetwn placed first in its event with a -time of 1:39.5 sec onds. Other Kings Mountain cm tries receiving points were: Stew Bakei. who finished third in the HlO-yard dash; Blackburn, fourth in tin 440 yard run; Ben Grimes, second in the 880-vard run; the mile relay team, which finished third; Calving Lockridge, who fin ished second in the high jump; and Cloninger who finished third in th< high jump.
