’’The Corrective Word” By REV. GEORGE T. MOORE RMumcttoa Lutheran Church TKXT: Jeremiah 7:1-3. The word that came to Jeremi ah from the Lord: "Stand in the gate of the Lord's house, and pro claim there this word, and say, Hear the word of the Lord, all you men of Judah who .-nter these gates to worship the Lord. Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel. Amend your ways and your doings, and I will let you dwell in this platT.” One of the great miracles of to day is tlx- miracle of hearing. Not only are we able to heat sounds nearby, but sounds afar, off. sounds from any point on earth. Tbe air is filled, every mi nute. with millions of words, with countless melodies of music words and music being broadcast around the globe. Yet these are not the limits. Just this past Friday we heard *the hum of Ranger 7. right up to its moment of imnact on the moon's surface. Intelligible sounds coming from over 240.000 miles away! Not very many months ago another roving satellite trans mitted its information act iss mil lions of miles of space as it sped by the planet Venus, and we heard it. Tbday. radio telescopes are re celving signals from the distant corner* of the universe, distances so great as to stagger human im agination. One of the great mi racles of today is the miracle d* hearing! However, a greater and far m«re Important miracle, one which overshadows all the others, is the miracle of the voice of God. It is the voii'e of the <• xt wh** speaks and Who must be heard. ‘Titus says the Lord of hosts, 'is tht miracle we must hoar!" Tills is the true miracle, where in God speaks anti is heard. Kot when God speaks there is erea titm and life. re<Toati >n anti eter nal life. It is most important to see the contrast as fust illustrated because God’s voice is not getting today, the attention it must an,I should. Ranger Ts achievement w'ill get far more attention tlvan will the voice of God. It already has! Why? Because tht Word of God even where reveren.-ed. is consid e -ed to be the sounds of a bygone day. unable to cone with the de • mands and challenges of tht 2nth. century. The most a lot of people get out of Gjd’s Word, and this includes a lot of Christians, is a set of rules and regulations about being good, honest, upright, re spected citizens, on their terms! It is true that God did speak to a hygont day. He called a chosen |>eople unto himscir. To these se lect ones Re -joke of pr >mise and assurance. To a disobedient people He spoke of wrath and destruction, even though Ht was c->nstantly eager to have them hear anew and return unto Him. Therefore, in the face of disin terest. wandering astray, and re bellion. God was always speaking THOMSON & McKinnon Members New York and American Stock Exchanges and other leading Ex changes 110 Liberty Life Building Charlotte, N. C. He spoke that men might hear and hearken and obey, and be saved from self- i destruction. The word that came to Jere miah from the Lord: ‘Stand in the gate of the Lord's house, and proclaim there this word. antf sap. Hear the Lord, all you men of Judah who enter these gates to worship the Lord. Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Is rael, Amend your ways and your doing* ad I will let you dwell in this place'.” There is no question ab tut it. Judah had forgotten Its God. Be sides all the other evils which they were committing, their wor ship was of the lifMt and not of the heart. And the necessity of a proyphet being sent was the proof of the need for correction. It was God speaking the cor rective word. If you hearken t my voice it will be well with you. If you will not. if you continue in your ways, it will be death for you! For God e.\pe<*ts his own to he different, to show a change for the t-etter. to he new men. They are to be God's own child ren in heart and mind and soul, to he God like before the world! The important point is that this is the* voice of the eternal God! And He is sneaking these same, identical words to you and me :his very day. his corrective ward! Withojt daring to judge (for no one dare do sot. the facts hit us with the impact of doom itself! Is the w »rld Christian? Two thirds of the world's population do not yet know the Christ of re deeming life! Is the world well-fed. well clothed, and satisfied? TVo thirds of the world's population lives on a starvation diet, ill clothed. and dissatisfied! Is the world one in Christ? The tremendous waste of dupli cation of effort, of cimpetition between religious groups and de nominations is an insult to the Christian Church, and to Jesus Christ, the Head of the Chu'vh! Is the world one in Christ? The world is seeing blood shed in its streets, property destroyed, hat red intfnsified. because it carvwt '-all every man brother: because it cannot’live in oeace with each other even as Christians! Is the world giving its first al legience of time, talent and pos sessions to the work of the king dom of God? We spend more t'me. attention and money, every vear. on the core and heautifica tion of the body than we do or he work of the kingdom of God. And what does God sav? *'What -hall it profit a man if he should •»s’n the whole world and lose Vs own soul?" "What shall a man give in exohstige for his toul?" Remember? Jesus wept over a city and a nation that had sold its soul in pride and self-satisfac tion. with no desire to hear what God was saving. Mark this well! If God's Word s true. He is weeping over us. over our nation, over our world today! The wonderful truth, and how -edeeming it is. is that God is still speaking, still saying “If..." “If you. who are cant'd by my Name shall humble yourselves, anti pray and seek my face, anti turn from your evil ways, inen I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive your sins and heal your land.” It's not too late! Over al| other sounds, there •times anew the voice of the gra cious God. Over the sounds of strife and urmoil and anxiety, over the sounds of modern -day miracles, over the greatest we .•an produce, the still small voice of God is heard, loud and clear! I am the Lord, the Almighty, your I.f>rd and your God. Return unto me and hearken unto my voice, anti I will sustain vou.
