R. Clapp. Teehnli'illy. a liming material is anj material high in ealeium • or ealrium and magnesium* that has a neutralizing pffeet on soil acidity. There atv a numlwr of different liming materials avail able. some of which are listed be. low along with their neutralizing equivalent: Dolomitie limestone < agricultural limestone) 95 10s Calcitic limestone S5-100 Burned u-austie, lime 150-175 I lydated lime 120-135 liurned oyster shells 90-110 Marl 30-90 Basie slag ts 10''. P205i 50-70 The greatei the neutralizing equivalent, the greater the neu trallying power or effect per pound of material. Dolomitie limestone contains magnesium as well as calcium and is a good source o fthese im portant. essential nutrients says Mr. Clapp. Particle size is also a factor to consider in choosing a liming material. The more finely 'und the material the quicker Wr will reach and neutralize the soil acidity; however, all liming materials are required by law to ! lie of a certain fineness in order to he sold as a liming material. Bulk lime that is stored out of ! doors often becomes wet. This moisture should he of no concern providing the material is dry enough to spread. Mr. Clapp also points out that a soil test is necessary to deter mine the need for lime. Soil test , liming suggestions are based on the neutralizing equivalent of dolomitie and agricultural lime stones, the most commonly used materials, so if some other lim ing material is used, the amount applied should he adjust*^ ac cording to its neutralizing equiv alent. Regardless of which liming material is used, he sure and keep your soils limed to optimum levels suggests Mr. Clapp. Lim ing is often overlooked, but is one of the most important steps in a good farming program.
