Heart Disease
CilAPEL HILL The North
Carolina Heart Association “con
servatively estimates” that at
least 262 thousand adults in the
state have definite heart disease
■ and some 210 thousand more
have suspect heart disease.
The new state estimates arc
based on data recently reported
by the U. S. National Health
Survey, which showed 13.2 per
cent of all adults in the Cnited
States, including 21.1 pericnt of
all Negro adults, had definite
heart disease.
Other North Carolina esti
mates made public by the state
heart group include lv‘7 thousand
adults with definite hypertensive
heart disease: 19 thousand a
dulls with coronary heart dis
ease; and 29 thousand adults with
rheumatic heart disease. Since
1960. more than 90 thousand
North Carolinians have died of
cardiovascular disease over
halt of all deaths in the state.
Earlier estimates, based on
out dated national population
' sample studies, had indicated 2f*t
thousand men. women, and chil
dren in North Carolina were af
flicted by heart and blood vessel
disease. The new information,
released by the U. S. Public
Health Service a few weeks ago.
has been carefully studied anti

president of the North Carolina
Heart Association.

selected sample of 7,526 house
