CANS OF YOUR CHOICE STRETCHING YOUR DOLLARS © by Philip J. Goldberg Chj -rjn fnsMute for Financial Planning fnc. I For vcars. I have been lis.en rg to parents complain about iow little their children under stand the x.slue of mono}. Huj say, "I don't want my kids to uffer the way I di<l. I want them to have everything they want!" This might sound n able. but it \ nonsense. We are creating a generation of "monetary motis ters" who have practically no ippreriati in for w hat they are receiving. Followin' a thorough ly distasteful incident with his •on. a friend of mine introduced i procedure for indoctrinating a <ense of financial resjionsibility in his children that I would like to recommend to all families. The last financial straw occur* red when his son. a 17 year old high school student, demanded his own car. Now. my friend can easily indulge his children in every whim, and he does. Since the boy had been using the fam ily car whenever he wanted it. the request for an auto of his own was, in my opinion, exces sive. However, my friend had (his American mania to go all out for his kids. Instead of giving his son a sorely needed facts of life lecture as I would have advised. h<* de cided to surprise ids boy with a spanking, new convert! le To add an extra touch of personal satisfaction to the gift, my friend took his son to the dealer to pic!: up the car. Tile trip was charged with cheerfulness. After all. this is the second largest investment many people make in their life time: and the biggest for most. Finally, standing before tin white convertible, the boy’s f tee became twisted with disappoint ment. “Gee. Pad," his son moaned. "I ■vanted a such-and-such sports car.” Furious, the father made ar rangements with the dealer to have the car sold to someone else. Still angry when he reached home, my friend, a brilliant bus mess man. decided t » introdu •«• n program to make his children financially responsible adults. Mere is what he did: 1. He immediately stunned giv ng his children gifts, except on heir birthdays and special holi days. 2. He organized family meet ngs whenever he and h> wife decided to make any kind of pur ha«e such as buying a new washing me. hi no or paint.n house. LSut first, mother and dail had to approve the purpose lor which tile money was t i he used. ■I. Tlii* ehildren were permitted to sit in n discussions with the family’s insurance agent, lawyer and accountant.
