Jown at Daytona Beach, we gave everyone another look at Buick's “Win Policy". A V-8 Buick Special won over stiff competition (sorry, boys!) in Class IV—in the 1965 Pure Oil Performance Trials. The winning Special was equipped with our 300 cubic inch Wildcat 310 V-8 and Super Turbine Transmission. Remember that the drivers in the Performance Trials are skilled professionals, and the cars finely tuned standard produclion models. (If it can be said that the Special is “Standard" anything.) Also remember that the trials are an exhausting, carefully graded test of a car s all around ability. In economy, acceleration and braking. Small wonder the Special came out on top. Handsomely. (The specific detail? Our hero averaged 20.689 mpg in economy, to score second among 10 cars. It accomplished the acceleration test—from 25 to 70 mph—in 9.315 seconds, for a fifth. And took another second in braking: from 65 to 0 mph in 172.0 feet. The cumulative result: we won all the marbles in Class IV.) Now then. If vou re going to enter something-like a car— you might as well do it to win. too. Your Butck dealer can introduce you to the driver's seat of a Buick Special. If you arc ivally intern upon ■ i>:rharkiD|| '>0 a m-*no> saving i program. you should plan it as j •a ic fully as a miss countiy trip 1 You must know in advance ex actly where you arc goihji and what you must do to stretch | your dollars into savings. Here I arc ten commandments for ae i cumulating that much desired ■'pare cash: 1. Set up a budget for the fam ily and adhere to it rigidly. This | is your blue print for saving. , 2. Buy only what you need. No whim purchase — this ts waste- , I ful. and uj»scts your budget plan. 3. If you have overspent on your budget, plan to make up this deficit in the following week. •1. Remem tier that you can make inexpensive cuts of meat | and vegetables extremely dc- > lightful through careful cook- j mg 5. Those inexpensive canned foods are often just as good as the high priced ones. Usually, they are marked down because the cans have been slightly mar red when they leave the cannery. t>. Shop for the family clothes at the end of each season. At this time stores have .sales to re duce their Inventory. You may have less of a selection, but big ger savings. 7. Enormous savings can be achieved by buying used goods. ; Items such as furniture, radios, television sets, air conditioners, garden equipments and all sorts of household appliances have ab solutely no resale value for pbo- , pic discarding them. Frequently, they are merely oki. but in ex cellent condition. You can buy these items at a fraction of their : original cost. They are advertis- ■ cd in a small town newspapers , and in special publications pub lished in almost every big city. You might even wind up with an antique. fv Take your tuncn to worn and you can save over $5.00 a week. Sandwiches ■"? oaten at the desk in the most piush of fices. You can take yours from homo and s3vo, rather than or dering from a luncheonette. 0. Watch that extra movie. Don’t take the entire family to dinner. Your objective is to ac <-umulate some savings. There fore. living under a rigid budget means postponing some of these pleasures for awhile. 10. You can save on drug items by buying the house brands put out by many large stores. Usual- j ly. they cost considerably less than nationally advertised pro ducts and generally are just as | good.
