India’s climbing fish can live out of water for 2 to 3 days. Red clover came from Europe. Elarly indications point to a potentially serious blue mold dis ease problem for North Carolina tobacco growers this spring. The fungus disease that at tacks tobacco plants has arrived in the state about a month ear lier than last year. “This early ix>port generally indicates a potentially sbvere blue mold year,” says Furney Todd, extension plant pathologist at North Carolina Slate. "It means that the disease is likely to attack the plants when they are vbry small. Damage is more severe in this case,” Todd added. The severity of the blue mold problem will be determinied by the weather -- cool, wet, windy weather favors spread of blue mold—and by promptness with which farmers act to prevent the disease. “Our farmere have an .“xcrl- lent record in this respect," T.'dd pointed out. "Blue mold Icsse ; have been very light over i lie past few years. Over 90 lar cent of our growers treat their pl.mt beds for the disease." As a result, said Todd, "we haven’t experienced serious blue mold damage since 1957 when heavy losses were suffered and planting was delayed on many 'farms.” The first report of the disease this year was in Bladen county. Todd suggests that growers In the Eastern and Bolder belts be gin treatment or continue treat- .iii 111 if tiu-y have already begun. Treatment should begin In the other areas, including the tiurley area, when plants reach the size of a dime or when blue mold- is reported nearby. The plant pathologist empha sized lliat treatment is fairly -simple and effective, "but it is a preventive treatment and will not cure ihedlsease if it is al ready present.” He explained that treatment with a fungicide containing eith er ferbam, zineb or maneb pre vents three diseases, blue mold, damping off and anthracnose. “One of the common mistakes farmers often make is when they stop treatment when they begin transplanting,” Todd related.
