Green Post 155 juniors into the quarterfinals of the Area IV championships Friday night at Hickory. Left to right are Bill Mullinax (1-2), Seerley Lowery (2-1), Steve Goforth (0-0), Mickey Adkins (1-0), and PhUip Gladden (1-1). Steve Wilson (1-0) and Ronnie Rhea (0-0) are not pictured. Boimont lost 16 bovs and u ill have nine seniors and on three hits. Bessemer scored the runs as a result of three singles, three KM errors, a field er’s choice, and a .sacrifice. Bessemer added one more run in the eighth. Catcher Jerry Milwood led Bes semer City at the plate with three singles in four times at bat. Bes semer Citv had only one extra 18 juniors on this year's team, including ’64 starters Barry | base hit. a double by third-base- Farmei, 223-pouiul tackle, and lullback Charles Orren. Rising junior Tommy Tate saw much action at one end post last year. Quarterback Will Present Big Problem The Kings Mountain coaches are going to have their hands full trying to replace such players as Richard Gold, Stove Grigg, (h’orgo Idonk, Ronnie Rhea, etc., bul the big gest probleiii to face the coaching staff this year will be the replacing ol I’at Murphy, the ninnber one (juartcrback in the SWC b>r ihc past two seasons. Murphy was, without a doubt, the reason why Kings Mountain won the conference championship last season and co-cb.ampionship honors in ’G.'k He lo.ssed J(> touchdowns this season, but the amazing thing about the year was that he didn’t start throwing un til the season was half gone. Murphy was awarded the team Leadership trophy, which he richly deserved. He was all-conference for two seasons, ’63 and ’64, and was one of the best quarterbacks in the state, the best in the 3-A. Murphy has been awarded a full scholarship to Ap palachian State Teacher’s College and will certainly be of help to the ASTC Mountaineers in the next four years. The quarterback position could go to either of four or five boys. Rising juniors Tommy Goforth and Tommy Finger quarterbacked the tenth grade team last season and will be fighting it out for tlie starting role this year. Rising senior and letterman Steve Goforth or rising junior Philip Wright could possibly switch from their halfback positions and Doug Mercier will be moving up from the jayvee squad. Who To Replace Cloninger, McGinnis? Another boy who will be missed heavily this season will be Jimmy Cloninger, all-conference and all-state end and best punter in the conference in ’64. Cloninger punted for a 39.1 average last year and was one of the key receiv ers of Murphy’s passes. Also, Hubert McGinnis is going to be missed in three or four spots. McGinnis was all-conference and all-state in *64, the best center in the SWC, and one of the best ex tra point makers in the conference. McGinnis was also one of the key men on the defen sive side the KM team. The big 210-pounder scored a total of 27 points last season, 21 conversions and one touchdown. The TD was a blocked punt in the Cherryville end zone, plus, the big man intercepted many passes and was responsible for the breaking up of many opposing plays. KM coaches will have to come up with a couple good ends to take the place of Cloninger, Richard White, and Jimmy Wright, a center to replace McGinnis, and a couple of guards to replace Steve Grigg and George Plonk. Chucky Gladden will most likely bo at one of the guard posts and Kenny Plonk will see much action on the line. A 1964 end, Fred Wright, could possibly be moved to the center position and John Van Dyke and Tommy Dover will also see much action at the end posts.
