‘‘How long are you in for, buddy?"
Women’s Health
Leede, England (WMNS): A
mild depression after the joyous
achievement of giving birth is
quite normal about foiur days af
ter the great event, according to
J, .S. Scott, Leeds Univeisity pro
fessor of obstetrics. But Pi'of.
Scott feels that too often the at-
.Tosphere surrounding a new
mother contributes to a deepen
ing of that depression. He says a
new mother is not invalid and
suggests that just as soon as it
: seems reasonably cei lain that
she is in good condition, a new
mother ”be given a glass of
champagne, a eup of tea, or
whatever her palate fancies. . ."

Chewing gum has its place—
or so we’re assured by both tots
and teens But its place isn’t in
the water. Swimmers and tiny
waders shouldn’t chew gum
while in the water. A sudden
gasp can lodge the gum so deep
in the larynx that those adminis
tering first aid can’t reach it,
even if they know it’s there.

M(?Coy Air Force Ba.se, Fla.
(WMNS): Havitig a drink just
before or during a high altitude
jet flight could be hazardous, if
there was sudden decompression
of the plane’s cabin. This is the
report of Air Force investigat
ors, Capts. J. L. Netties and Rob
ert N. 01s,c n.
Using volunteers in altitude
chamber tests, they found that
minutes of useful consciousness
wore reduced 38 per cent after
the consumption of the alcoholic
equivalent of one martini. Be
cause those minutes could be vi
tal in obtaining supplementary
oxygen or in other emergency
procedures, they conclude that
’‘this factor alone should prohibit
the use of alcohol prior to, or
I during flight.”
